Castaeda, E., Klassen, J. D., & Smith, C. (2014). Hispanic and Non-Hispanic Homeless
Populations in El Paso, Texas. Hispanic Journal of Behavioral Sciences, 36(4), 488-505.
This article shows surveys taken in El Paso, in different homeless spaces where Hispanics were
more present and where they werent. This survey helps compare Hispanic and non-Hispanic
homeless and their different characteristics, populations and characteristics. This article will be
utilized in my paper to support my claim of the lack of attention homeless get in El Paso. The
article showcases the conditions they have to live in and the limited help they receive.
Smith, C., Castaeda, E., & Heyman, J. (2012). The Homeless and Occupy El Paso:
Creating Community among the 99%. Social Movement Studies, 11(3/4), 356-366.
This article demonstrates the citys homeless role in the Occupy movement. The occupiers
vacated San Jacinto Plaza and in their time there, did not want homeless to be a part of their
community. This situation is another example of how unfairly homeless in the city are treated.
They article notes that they were treated as if they didnt have equal rights and denied food that
came from donations, which help backup my argument of homeless not being given fair aid.
Rocha, Rebecca (1995). Homelessness in El Paso Shelters: Needs of Mothers with
Children. El Paso: University of Texas-El Paso, Department of Sociology.
This book focuses on the growth of homeless in the El Paso area, and the problems that come
with it. The author also includes research done on assistance programs the city has to offer for
homeless on the streets and struggling mothers. This book helps me take a closer look at the
programs the city of El Paso has to help the homeless. It also gives me insight on not only
homeless individuals, but families as well.
Lachica, G. J. (2013). Homelessness and migration at the edge of America: Transnational
mobility and survival in the streets of El Paso. El Paso.
This thesis exposes what life is like on the streets for homeless people in the border. It also
touches on migration and its impacts. Lachicas thesis will help me illustrate what life is really
like on the streets in El Paso and what it takes to survive in this city.
Ryan, E., & Hartman, M. (2000). Homeless families on the border: A demographic profile.
Journal Of Children & Poverty, 6(2), 169-177.

This article focuses on the subjects of large immigrant population, poverty, high unemployment
rates and growing numbers of homeless families. The authors conducted a study to determine the
characteristics of homeless families in El Paso in comparison to homeless families in 10 other
cities. Their research will further support my paper in revealing how neglected the homeless are
in El Paso, and how little funding goes to them.
