Racialsegregationinschools

SIncethe1950sracialsegregationhasbeenverycommonintheUSandmanypeople
haveencountereditfacetoface.Currentlyithasdecreasedyetcanstillbeverycommonin
populatedstatesorcities.Itwaseasilyseenthatblacksandwhiteswereneverinthesameside
ofthestreet,crosswalk,bathroomsorevenresidencesuchashouses.Thequestionconcerning
nowishowdidthisaffectmanystudentsatschoolknowingtheycouldnotattendanevent
becauseofthefactthatonlyonespecificrace
wasbetterthantheother.Therehavebeenmany
casesanduptothisdaytelevisionshowsor
moviesthathavedevelopedscenesoroccasions
wherethistopicispresentandmosthave
receivedawardsforthehighquality.Evento
whenitcametotrialsincourtroomsracismwas
present,orwhenitcametochoosingwhowas
guiltyandwhowasinnocent.Theprobabilityfor
ablackafricanamericantowinbetweenwhiteswouldbeverylow.ThemostcommonInrelation
tothisisthecasetakenplacein1954CalledBrownv.BoardofEducationwheretherewas
segregationinvolvedatschool,thefactthatthiswashappeningcanaffectthechild'sabilityto

learn,thesenseoffeelinginferiortothosewhohadhigherbenefitsandlimitingtheirabilityto
learnandlackofsuppliesthatwouldallowforthechildrentosucceedsuccessfullyinlifeno
matterwhattheirbackgroundis.InthecaseofBrownv.BoardofeducationtheNAACPtook
partinthisfortheirmission
oftheNationalAssociationfortheAdvancementofColored
Peopleistoensurethepolitical,educational,social,andeconomicequalityofrightsofall
personsandtoeliminateracebaseddiscrimination.
Areviewwasshownthattherewasmoreracial
segregationinthenorththanthesouthconsidering
thisunderthejimcrowlawtheyallhadseparate
roomsandpublictransportationintowhichthey
eachhadtogoondifferentbussesorbasicallyhave
lowerprivilegesthantheamericans.Acasesimilar
tothisisrosaparksinwhichshedeniedtogiveup
herseat,whenthishappenedthelawsofsegregationwereactiveandthisisthereasoninwhich
whatshedidwasnotcorrectastootherseyes.InrelationtothecaseofBrownv.theBoardof
educationbesidesthefactthatracialsegregationispresentinbothcasestheybothhadtheir
constitutionamendmentsgoneagainst,thecorrectthingshouldbethatnomatterwhatraceyour
areorskincoloryouarepersonallyprotectedbytheamendmentsyet,manypeoplebackinthe
1950sdidnotobeythemthereforeitwasasiftheafricanhadnorights.Lateroninyearswe
begantoseehowthisstartedtochangeforlawsbecameactivetohelpthosewhofeltunsafeor
werenotreceivingenoughbenefitsfromthecontinuousjobtheywereprovidingtoothers.In
1865thethirteenthamendmentwasratifiedmakingslaveryillegallaterthe14thand15th

amendmentbecameactivethe14thallowedAmericancitizenstobefreefromunfairstatelaws
Laterthe15thamendmentwasratifiedallowingafricanamericanmentobeabletovoteyet
manyrestrictionsincludedthisprivilegetheyhadtotakeliteracytestsinwhichiftheycould
notreadtheywouldn'tbeabletovote.Thisliteracytestwasbasicallyeliminatingmostblacks
fromvotingsincemanywerenotabletoreceivethatsametypeofeducationasfortheothers
whowereabletoenjoyfromthosebenefits,anotherwayitchallengedformanyafrican
americanstovotewerethroughpolltaxeswhichinthiscasemanydidnothavethefinancial
source.Throughouttheyearsasmentionedbeforesegregationhasdecreased,yetmanystillhave
thepastthoughtsofsituationsthattheyconfronted.
Integrationofpublicschoolsinthe1960sbecameadaptedinwhichallseparateschools
wereunequalduringthistimetherewaslessdesegragationthaninanyotheryear.Itwasmost
commonlyseenlaterintheyearshowmanyafricanamericanshadtheirdecisiontotransfer
schoolsuchaswhiteschoolbutnotcommoninwhitessuchasforwhitesitwouldn'tbecommon
forthemwantingtotransfertoaschoolinwhichtheywouldhavelessoftheschoolresources
leavingalltheirgoodeducationtogosomewherewheretheywouldn'thavethat.Although
theyhadtheabilitytodecidemanyschoolsremainedthesame,untillateron.However
segregationwasdifferentineverydifferentplaceforexampleoutsidethesouth,Manynorthern
schoolswerestillsegregatedbecauseofthewaythehousingpatternswereat.Businginwhich
theschoolsmanyblacksattendedwherenormallyinferiorprovidedbythegovernmentthe
descriptionoftheseroomswereshackswithnofundingforpaper,pencilsorothertypesof
suppliesneeded,incomparisontothewhiteswhiletheywereatschooltheirschoolsand
classroomswerewellequippedwithhighclassresources.Whilethesechildrenhadnohopefor

attendingcollegeintheirnearfuture,thisinsuredthatnomatterwhattheywouldendup
spendingtheirlivesasapoorlaborerworkingforwhites,inwhichtheywouldreceivenorespect
whatsoeverreasonbeingtheircolor.Meanwhiletheothersenjoyedtheirlifepushingthem
aroundaswellashavingthebesteducationintheworld.
ConsideringthisitallremainswiththetopicofthecourtcaseofBrownv.Boardof
educationinwhichtheystoodupfortheserightsinwhichitwastakentocourt,laterfederal
judgeswereinstructedtoexamineschoolsystemsonacitybycitybasiswiththisinspection
theywouldbeabletoviewandmakethenecessarychangesforallthestudentstobeequal,the
supremecourtdecisionwasnotclearenoughinwhichthelawforendingracialsegregationin
schoolsmanyremainedthesameforacoupleofyearsafterthefinalverdictofBrownv.Board
ofeducation.Inmanydifferentplacesthisactionwasdelayedreasonbeingthattheydidnot
agreethattheschoolsshouldbeseparatedbycolorandthattheywerenotworthyofthis.In
anothercasewithPlessyv.Fergusonisaboutamanbythenameofhomerplessytakenplacein
the1890sinwhichhewasoneeighthfromafricanancestryinwhichlegallyhewasconsidereda
coloredperson.AtthattimealawwaspassedbytheUSSupremeCourtstatingthattheywere
equalbutseparateonintrastaterailroads.Thislawbecameverycontroversialaswellasmany
othersforinthecaseofplessyhetestedtothehighestthefourteenthandfifteenth
amendment,laterastalkedaboutthecivilrightsmovementmadeitsothatAllAmericancitizens
weretobetreatedequalandbeprovidedbythesamerightsastheotherswould,aswellas
makingitillegaltodiscriminateanyonewhethertherecolororanythingthatwaspublicsuchas
parksormovietheaters.Basingonthisinformationwecanseehowthisgrouptestedthe
ThirteenthandFourteenthAmendments,whichwereaddedtotheConstitutionaftertheCivil

Thewayallthisinformationissimilartothewaythatracialsegregationinschoolswere
isveryinterestingsincewecanseehowithasevolvedthroughtheyears,butwemayask
ourselvesisthisstilloccurringnowindaysorhavewejustbecametoooblivioustonoticeany
recentoccurrencesofracialsegregationnowindaysasopposedtosome90yearsago.the
numberofblackstudentsinschoolswhere90percentormoreofthestudentpopulationare
minoritiesrosefrom2.3milliontoover2.9million.(Propublica)aswecanseetheamounthas
changedaround6demonstratinghowracialsegregationhasdecreased,yetinmanyotherways
itisstillthesamesuchaslikingaracebecauseofparticularreasons.Inmyopinionithinkthat
thisproblemwillneverchange,ithinkthatitwillalwaysremainthesameinthewaythatwe
alwayswillbestereotypicalaboutapersonnomatterwhatracetheyare.Inotherwordsithink

thatthisshouldnotinterferewithhowschoolsshouldbetreatednowadays,ithinkthatitis
importantforeveryonetoreceivethesametypeofeducationnomatterwhatcolororethnicity
theyare.IalsothinkthatinthecaseofBrownv.boardofeducationisagreatwayto
demonstratehowwecanallmakeachangeandhelpourselvestobeabletobetreatedthesame,
inthiscasewhattheydidmadehistoryandissomethingverypowerfulthathelpsusrealizethat
wecanfightforourrightseventhoughitmaynotmakeachangebutitwilldefinitelyhelpusto
realizethatwetriedandhelped.
