Dear Hiring Committee,
!

Most of you know me, but if we had not had the pleasure, my name is Jeffrey Allen Rogers. I am
currently completing my Masters in Special Education and plan on graduating in May 2016. I
have had the amazing opportunity to intern/volunteer for Miss Anita Gleasons classroom at
O.W. Erliwine. As you may know, she is the Special Education teacher in Room 14 for 4th-6th
grade, I had the opportunity to spend a semester with her. Over this semester with Miss Anita
Gleason, I shadowed her and she helped me understand the responsibilities that come with being
a Special Education teacher. This great experience has given me the attributes needed to teach
Special Education. I am really interested in the Special Education position that is open, I believe
that I am highly qualified for this position from the internship over the semester and because of
my English 20 class.

Teaching and learning is similar to riding a bike, it takes a lot of practice and is a journey. The
reason I chose the name, Jeffreys Journey and the picture along with it, is because I want to
take you through my journey and explain that this really is a journey to learn and teach.

I took an English course my second year of college that has blessed me and given me the skills to
write this letter of interest to writing simple essays. My great professor gave me the confidence
to write more sophisticated and with better techniques. There were some goals she had given us
that we needed to meet by the end of the year. I believe I completed these goals and they have
now helped me be even more qualified for this job opportunity. The first goal, is to read texts
from a variety of disciplines in a variety of genres. This goal will help me in the Special
Education field by reading emails, syllabi, letters, journals, etc. The second goal, is to identify
appropriate context-based writing conventions. This goal will help me in the Special Education
field by helping structure my writings. This involves grammar, spelling, punctuation, but also the
structure of emails, syllabus, homework, etc. The third goal, is to compose, formal and informal,
in a variety of genres. This goal will help me in the Special Education field for when I need to
write someone something. This can be as simple as homework for the students or letters home to
parents on their day at school, it can also be a serious letter to the district. This goal has prepared
me to write in any situation and context. The last goal, was to develop the ability to think
critically about the values and standards of various disciplines. This goal will help me in the

Special Education field by knowing my audience and the different qualities of various
disciplines.

There are two projects that I have included in my Portfolio. My first project is an essay about my
particular discourse community and an interview. In this essay I researched and discussed the
discourse community of Special Education. I also conducted an interview to ask about this
discourse community, I interviewed Miss Anita Gleason. This project demonstrates the tasks I
mentioned above. My second project is an annotated bibliography. In this essay I researched 5
different texts and had to construct a rhetorical analysis and a summary per each text. I had to
have different forms of sources, such as scholarly journals, website, videos, etc. These two
projects that I completed in English 20 have prepared me for this position in Special Education
and proves my mastery in the English 20 course.

I believe that I am qualified for the Special Education teaching position. I have taken courses and
interned to help me acquire the traits needed for this position. I have the passion needed to help
these children and the patience required. You will see this through my two projects that are also
attached.

Very best,
!
