What does Tyler need?

Based on pre-assessments,
Tyler will need to work on
the following:
Independent Reading
Spelling/Decoding
Building Confidence
Engaging with Texts

Goal 1: Student will be able

to connect with the text.
Based on the pre-activities, it is clear that Tyler is not
a fan of reading he finds it very boring.
As a result of the information from the Interest
Inventory, I know that Tyler loves (and plays) football.
Therefore, I have selected a text for him that is at an
appropriate reading level for him, and is about
something that he enjoys.
Text: The Football Genius by Tim Green.
Tyler completed an Anticipatory Guide to spark his
interest about this text and get him motivated to read.

Goal 2: Student will be able

to break down words into
syllables.
Tyler struggles with reading and decoding.
One of the issues that he has is breaking
down the words in to syllables.
Using the list of vocabulary words from The
Football Genius by Tim Green, Tyler will work
on breaking down these words and sounding
them out.
I would model for him how to break down
these words then have him create a foldable
with the vocabulary words broken down.
He can then practice reading / sounding out
the words.

Goal 3: Student will be able

to identify and define
prefixes and suffixes.
Besides learning to break up words into
syllables, it is important to become familiar
with the prefixes and suffixes.
If Tyler is familiar with word beginnings and
endings, he will be opening himself to a greater
collection of sight words.
Tyler completed prefix / suffix foldables so that
he could become more familiar with these
words, and help to recognize/identify words
more easily as hes reading.

Goal 4: Student will be able

to organize his thoughts
and ideas regarding the
text.
Tyler is not confident in his reading skills.
Due to his struggle, he questions his ability to
understand the text.
As he works on his reading skills, I want to make
sure that he also continues to work on his
comprehension skills.
Therefore, Tyler fills out a Flip Chart for each
chapter of the book.
He keeps track of characters, plot, themes,
makes inferences, etc. as he reads.

Goal 5: Student will be able to

develop their writing skills
while also building upon their
spelling and vocabulary skills.
As Tyler reads chapters from the book, I have
him stop to reflect on what he has read.
In these writing assignments, he either
summarizes the chapter, makes predictions
about what might happen next, or write about
how he can relate to what he is reading.
This helps him to familiarize himself with the
words that he is reading. The more that he
sees and uses these words, it will be more
likely he will be able to identify them when
reading (and become more fluent).

Effect of
Lessons/Strategies
Tyler has started to show improvement.
He focusing more closely on the words and
trying his best to break down the words into
syllables.
He is more comfortable using new vocabulary.
He still struggles with confidence, and does not
feel comfortable reading aloud in front of
others.
He does seem more interested engaged in
reading because he enjoys the material.

Recommendations
Tyler should continue reading aloud.
He needs to continue to practice breaking down the words
that he struggles with and sounding out the words.
As he has more exposure to new words, he will remember
them and become a more fluent reader.
Something that needs to be really worked on is his lack of
confidence.
He did become more interested in the reading, but he needs
to become confident in his abilities and improvements in
order to really enjoy it and continue working at it.
He should continue writing about the material so that his
comprehension skills continue to advance.

Conference with Teacher

In conferencing with his other teachers, we
discussed how important it is to expose him to
new vocabulary in advance so that he will
recognize the words more easily when reading.
It is also important for him to continue writing
in response to what he reads, helping him to
take the words he read and try his best to
make meaning from that.
I explained the strategies that I used to help
him, and encouraged them to find a method
that works in helping him to continue to
improve.

Self Reflection
It takes a lot of careful consideration, hard
work, and patience when working with
struggling students.
It is important to always keep their needs in
mind in order to best help them to succeed.
Take the time to understand the students
strengths as well as their weaknesses.
Use their strengths as an advantage (ex. Tylers
great memory).
