The Importance of Technology in the Classroom

Technology is an important part of the classroom. It would be a terrible idea
to get rid of technology in the classroom. For one, technology gets students more
excited to learn. Students are much more interested to learn when technology is
involved. Technology such as iPads, laptops, and smart boards provide different
styles of teaching and learning. With technology there is an infinite amount of
information that can be learned. We need technology in our school.
Children should learn how to use technology in school if they want to be
successful out in the real world. Most jobs involve the use of technology in some
way. Computers are especially used in middle schools and high schools, so why
should they not be used in our elementary school? Taking away the students use of
technology will only cause hardships for them as they move on in schools. As our
nation becomes increasingly more technology-dependent, it becomes even more
necessary that to be successful citizens, students must learn to be techsavvy (Wainwright). This world is becoming very reliant on technology, it is only
fair that we teach students from a young age how to use it.
It is obvious that most children love to use technology. When the holidays
roll around most children ask for an iPad, iPhone, iPod, laptop, etc. Having these
pieces of technology in the classroom is a great way to get children excited to
learn. Todays students love technology so they are sure to be interested in
learning if they can use the tools they love (Wainwright). Not only does it get
children excited to learn, but it also teaches the children in different ways.
Technology helps students take more control over their own learning. They learn
how to make their own decisions and actually think for themselves (Wainwright).
Technology is a great way to helps students control their learning.
Not only is technology great for learning, but it is great for teaching. With
the use of technology teachers can expand their lesson plans. Teaching with paper
and pencils is great, but it can become repetitive. The traditional passive learning
mold is broken. With technology in the classroom the teacher becomes the
encourager, adviser, and coach (Wainwright) . There are many tools that are great
for teaching that come with technology. Technology also makes for a more
interactive teaching and learning experience. With tools such as a smart board,
students can come up and answer problems on the board, which is a fun way of
learning. Teachers can use smart boards to get their lessons across and highlight
key points to the students. It is much more interactive for a teacher to use these
tools, rather than just lecturing and using the same old worksheets everyday.
This is exactly why it is important to keep technology in our school. Not
only does it allow for more interactive teaching and learning, it also excites the
students. It allows for deeper learning and endless amounts of information.

Identification of Standards
The National Educational Technology Standards for students have six
different standards. Standard number one is about creativity and innovation.
Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop
innovative products and processes using technology. Standard number two is for
communication and collaboration. Students use digital media and environments to
communicate and work collaboratively, including at a distance, to support
individual learning and contribute to the learning of others. Standard three is about
research and information fluency. Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate,
and use information. Standard four is about critical thinking, problem solving, and
decision making. Students use critical thinking skills to plan and conduct research,
manage projects, solve problems, and make informed decisions using appropriate
tools and digital resources. Standard five is about digital citizenship. Students
understand human, cultural, and societal related to technology and practice legal
and ethical behavior. Lastly, standard six is about technology operations and
concepts. Students demonstrate a sound understanding of technology concepts,
systems, and operations.
CCSD technology education standards have many different content
standards across all grade levels. For example, content standard 2.0 is for
productivity tools. Students use appropriate productivity tools including but not
limited to word processing, spreadsheet, database, multimedia and
telecommunications. Content standard 3.0 is about research tools. Students use
various technology tools to research information and evaluate its accuracy and
appropriateness in order to solve problems and make decisions. Content standard
4.0 is for tools and processes. Students will identify, apply concepts, and manage
various tools and resources to evaluate their accuracy and appropriateness in
solving problems and making decisions. These content standards go up to 6.0.
When it comes to state standards there are Common Core Standards.
Common core covers English Language Arts and Mathematics. Common core
standards differ as they relate to certain subject and are not specific to technology.
The district and national technology standards are similar as they go over all
technology uses and concepts.
The standard I will be meeting in my lesson plan is content standard 4.0. In
this standard students will identify, apply concepts, and manage various tools and
resources to evaluate their accuracy and appropriateness in solving problems and
making decisions.

Lesson Plan
Name Of Lesson: Geometric Recreation
Grade Level Appropriateness: 4th-7th
Technology Content Standard Addressed: Content 4.0Tools and Processes: Students will identify, apply concepts, and manage various
tools and resources to evaluate their accuracy and appropriateness in solving
problems and making decisions.
Other Content Standard Addressed: Understand concepts of angles and
measurements. Understand concepts of shapes.
Objective: The student will understand how to use line tools to create shapes,
understand angles, and understand measurements.
Materials Needed: Computer with a drawing program, and teachers printed
drawing.
Suggested group size: Pairs of two
Procedures: Step 1: Handout teachers printed drawing.
Step 2: Have students open up the drawing program.
Step 3: Have students click on the shape box, and click on the regular line tool.
(This will be the only tool used for the assignment). Make sure students set line
tool to 4 point.
Step 4: Have students look at the handed out drawing, and instruct to them that
they will have to recreate the teachers image exactly as it is, to the best of their
ability.
Step 5: When the student is done, and if time allows, let the students create their
own image and pair up with a partner so they can recreate each others images.
(Make sure the students save their recreated images).
Assessment: Students will be assessed based on their understanding of the
program, their understanding of angles and measurements, and how close they got
to the teachers drawing. Students most show an effort of understanding.
