THEME/TOPIC: Identifying Character Traits: The importance of understanding and
appreciation of the impact of the (Villainous) Character
CURRICULUM STANDARD: Unit One, Module 3, Prose Fiction: Literary/ Dramatic
Appreciation: Understanding character development in the play; making inferences as to how the
characters qualities and actions influences others.
TEACHING POINT: The Characters traits can be deduced by what he says and does: Iago
hides specific character traits in order to be perceived by others as Honest Iago, but the
Audience sees his true nature.
PURPOSE/RATIONALE: Students need to apply the knowledge of the elements of Literature
to derive optional meaning from the Dramatic Presentation of Character

SET INDUCTION: 5 Mins: The Use of a video clip to determine how we observe character.
The clip, from Breaking Bad demonstrates how Walters Wife no longer understands who he
truly is She now observes his total transformation. Students should be able to identify the
differences between The Walter Skylar knows, vs The Walter that is the REALITY. Sheet will
be provided.
