This is the most important parts to knowing a student who need help for their own
identityandneeds.IusedtoworkoneveryFridaytogoCrestontohelpdeafandhardofhearing
students whoneed help on their reading, writing, andmath. It is good to encourage young
studentswhoneedtobesucceedingacademicallybeforethestudentwillbehindfromthework.
Theauthor,EnidLeesays,Inagenuinelymulticulturalsociety,everyonewouldrecognizeand
honordifferencesinrace,ethnicity,gender,culture,class,language,sexualorientation,religion,
abilitiesandsoon,whilealsoacknowledging,thesimilaritiesofexperiencesandinterestsacross
thesesocialcategories.
Ibelievetheauthorissayingthatweshouldkeepencouragestudentsandtrytobecritical
literacytokeepgivingusmorepracticestovisionthesocietyinoneday.Itisourresponsibilities
as ateacher,asaneducator,asastaffthatwecanhelpthestudents toknowingtheirown
strugglegoingthroughschool.Forexample,atallkidmadefunofsmallkidintheplayground
andwontleavehimalone.Thisiswherewedontnoticethesituationwherethekidscanpick
on.Identityisacoreandunavoidablepartofallourlives.Ouractionsshapeouridentity,and
identityshapesouractions.Itisimportanttobethoughtful,proactiveandrigorousaboutourown
identity.Enidleearesayingitisimportanttoknowingeveryteacherisalanguageteacher
whethertheyknowitornottheyhaveresponsibilitytohelptheirstudentsdevelopthesestudents

languagesandcapacitiesinalltheirsubjectareastofix.Forinstance,Iamaneducatorcomingin
theclassroomandseeingthestudentspuzzledorconfusedonthepartinthereading.Thisis
whereIcanaskquestionstoletthestudentstohaveacomprehensionthatwillhavecapabilityof
understanding.
Thisisourfuturewhereweasaneducatorsandteacherswhoneedtakethesepossibilities
toprovideabasicliteracyforstudentstoseetheirdevelopmentforthereaders.Racismisoneof
themostbarrierthatpreventpeopletotakeanopportunitiestobecomeastudentatUniversity.
KeelyFloegel,ateacherwhohadknowtheawarenessofherpowerofreadingandwritinginto
this actionwherepeopleaskalotofquestions,andusingthosequestions toworkwiththe
studentsinthirdgradeclass.Itisgoodtoaskadeepquestiontoknowingwhatisyourfuturewill
looklikeandwherewillyoubeinnexttenyears.Itisimportanttohaveagoodcurriculumthat
willhelpyoutohaveahighqualityofeducation,andhighereducationthatthatwillhelpto
benefityourabilitiesandtohavetalentinreadingandwriting.

Americanbridges.ItisaboutaMexicanAmericangirlthatthebookwasnotrightbecauseher
motherwasntthere.HermotherwasanAmerican,andtheteacherdidntknowEnglishwasher
firstlanguage.Thegirlfeltthatthebookshouldbethrownout.Shewasbeginningtolearnand
readingherselfintothepictureandshecanfeelthatshewasthere.Forexample,Ispeakfour
differentlanguagesthatareEnglish,Bosnian,SpanishandSignLanguage.SometimesIfeel
missingwhenIdonthaveadeeperrelationshipwithmyfamilybecausemostofthemdonot
signwithme.IdohavetotalkBosnianwithmybigfamily.IhavetospeakSpanishwithother

familyandfriends.Idosignswithmyfriends,andinterpreteratschool.Ifeltthatthelanguages
mightbevanishedifIdontstillpracticeeveryday.ThisishowIfeltwhenthegirlfeeling
behindwhenshedidntgettolearn.
IwasastudentatClevelandHighSchool.Igraduatedwithamodifieddiploma,whichI
havetogomymainstreamclassesandcomebackinthedeafclassroomtoreceivehelp.Iwasnot
satisfiedwithmybiggoals.Thisdoesnthelpmealotasastudentbecausetheteacherwasnt
enough supportive. I was weakon my reading level, anddid okay on writing test to show
universityandIwasnotaccepted.InsteadItookthetest,Iwenttocommunitycollegeandtooka
lot of classes to prepare what career I am going for. I went to ACE Academy that called
Architecture,ConstructionandEngineering.Itisaschoolthathelpsforstudentsforinternship
programandtrainingprogramstohaveacertificateexperiencestogoingcollegethatwillgain
thestudentsknowledgebetterintheirfieldofstrengths.
Languagehelpsmetobecomeabetterperson.Englishwasnotmyfirstlanguagebutit
didmoldedmeasapersontodaybecausewithoutthelanguage,Iwontabletofindmyjob
becauseitishardtofindthejobwhenyourgoingcollege.Lifemakesiteasierinthatwayand
moresimple.Likemyfathersaystome,DoyouwanttoworkasIdointhegaragedoingscrap
metal?Son,youhaveabetterfuture,andthisiswhyweputyouinschooleverydaytobecome
somebody.Iamastrongwarriortostrivethegreatnesstoachievethosegoalsandbarriersthat
anythingispossible.IbecameagreatwritersothatwhereIcanexpressmyself.Ireallyliketo
workwithalotofstudentswithdifferentbackgrounds,andtoanalyzestudentswiththeirdeeper
understandingsothatwecanhelpthemtobecomeabetterstudentwithanawesomeleadership,

timemanagement,problemsolving,communicationwithinterpersonalskills,andcollaboration.
Thosearetheabilitiestohavetobecomeagreatcollegestudent.

educatorandanauthor.Shedemonstrateshowshedrawsonstudentslivesandtheworldto
teachpoetry,essay,narrative,andcriticalliteracyskills.Lindasaid,Weteachourstudentsnot
onlybywhatwesayintheclassroombutalsobywhatwedointheworld.Sheissayingthatit
isimportanttoknowingoutthereintheworldtoputwhatweshouldknowbutnottheinsidethe
classroomtodiscussaboutthesubject.Itisgoodtoknowingsomethingdifferentwhatpeopledo
intheirjobfield.Shesays,Socialjusticeisatthecoreofmyworkbecauseitisabeliefin
peoplespotential.Sheisfocusedonpersonalstancewritingtomakeanauthenticcommunity
oflearners.Christensenprovidespracticaladvicetoteacherswithanunderstandingthatwhen
ourstudentslearntowritetheyexperienceasenseofjoyandfulfillment.
