DNV Recommended Practice RP O501

Erosive Wear in Piping Systems
DNV RP O501 is a new Recommended Practice developed based on DNVs long term
experience within erosion in piping systems. The RP gives correlations for estimation of
erosion in pipe bends, Tee-bends, welded joints, in contractions and in smooth pipes. The
correlations are based on extensive experimental work and/or simulations by various
programme systems; i.e. ERBEND (a programme developed by DNV for calculation of
erosion in pipe bends) or CFX (a commercial CFD - Computational Fluid Dynamics programme, developed by AEA). The erosion code within CFX is developed by DNV and is
not a commercial AEA product.
The procedure is applicable both for dimensioning of pipe systems and for estimation of
erosion in existing systems based on the production characteristics; i.e. gas and liquid flow
rate, physical properties of gas and liquid, pipe dimensions, radius of curvature for the pipe
bends, particle size and the particle concentrations/amount of produced particles.
This RP is for sale at a cost of NOK 5.000,-. In addition, a PC programme has been developed
which includes all the models and correlations. The PC programme has the additional features
of goal seek, parameter runs, creating tables and figures which can be imported directly into a
report. The cost for the PC programme is NOK 20.000,- for one license and NOK 35.000,- for
a corporate license.
The development of the RP has been sponsored by Conoco Norway Inc., Norsk Hydro AS,
Saga Petroleum AS and Den Norske Stats Oljeselskap (Statoil) AS and partly also by Amoco
Norway Oil Company.
The DNV RP O501 is intended used instead of the API RP 14E.
The input window for the PC program is shown in the following figure.
The PC programme will be delivered on two diskettes, which can be applied both for
Windows 95 and Windows NT.
