A philosophy statement by Allison Erickson, University of Alaska Southeast

+ Math is Relevant, Foundational, and Achievable!

I believe that all students have the potential to learn math, and that it is my
job to engage them that brings that potential into practice. I believe that
learning math can be challenging, engaging, relevant and enjoyable
experience for all of my students. Mathematical concepts taught in
elementary school classrooms are foundational for future math instruction,
and I strive to teach math in a way that supports my students in developing
skills that will support them throughout their educational journey.

encourage students to develop an understanding of mathematical concepts; they

develop number sense. I ask students why and how they approach math, so that
they can build familiarity with mathematical concepts. In conjunction, I expect
students to practice math skills and facts to support fluency. Exposing students the
mathematics in a way that encourages them to problem-solve, relate to practical
applications, and practice what they have learned supports their ability to recall and
apply their prior knowledge to new problems. Math instruction is a continuous
process; a skill taught in week one will be employed the next. When students have a
number sense coupled with a strong foundation of relevant instruction, new
concepts are less mysterious, and students are empowered to investigate.

Relevant Learning Experience:

I present material in a relatable context to support the learning of the
process and enhance understanding of concept. I provide meaningful
opportunities to apply their learning and encourage critical thinking and
problem solving. I integrate technology, manipulatives, and unique
experiences to further support learning.

Integrated Content:
Math concepts can be practiced in almost any subject, and I capitalize on
opportunities to recall and practice math skills in new contexts. This
provides students the chance to think differently about how they use
math, thus furthering their understanding of application and concept.

Differentiated Instruction:
Individual learners bring a diverse classroom experience that can benefit all
students. To reach all learners, I provide multiple means of representation
and varied instruction to address individual needs. I utilize large group,
small group, and one-on-one instruction to engage students in a way that
works for them.

Informed Assessment:
Assessments are utilized to inform my teaching practice and provide
feedback to student. Through well-planned and appropriate examination,
I get a sense for what my students have learned from my instruction, and I
can tailor my instruction to meet the needs of individual students; whether
that be providing additional review or exposure to new enrichment
concepts.

Standards Based Curriculum:

Curriculum goals are based on national and district standards, ensuring my
students are on track to meet or exceed the content goals. I strive to
provide my students the tools and skills they need to be successful in
future school years.
