Social Studies:

I Know Statements and I Wonder Questions

Learning Target
This lesson will give students the opportunity to pose questions about Grahamtastic
Connection, a community organization that provides laptops, iPads and VGo robots to
children with serious illnesses. Students have been learning about Grahamtastic and today
they will consider what they are still curious about.

Student Learning Objective

I can talk about what I already know and wonder about Grahamtastic Connection.

Student Language Objective

I can use the question starter anchor chart to write questions and use my schema to write
what I already know.

Knowledge of Students
Literacy
I will model I know statements and I wonder questions.
Students will be able to refer to the question starter anchor chart or the question
starter graphic organizer for help.
I will add the word schema and its definition to our why do we ask questions?
chart from yesterday.
We will also refer to a schema anchor chart we created.
I will utilize turn and talk to give students, especially ELLs and exceptional learners,
time to formulate their thoughts.

Behavioral
I will write directions on the board and prompt students such as KL, JC, and NR as
necessary.

KL, JC, ZD, and NR will sit near me in the circle. I will listen to their conversations
during pair time to be sure they are contributing and to use their contributions to
add to the larger classroom conversation.

Assessment
Formative:
Students will play an I wonder game and come up with helpful questions to
identify the object.
Students will turn and talk and work in pairs to create I wonder questions and I
know statements.

Lesson Procedure
Hook (25 minutes)
Students will start at their desks. On each group of desks will be:
A random object that is unknown to the students
A number
Clipboard for each student with numbered sticky notes
Students will be instructed to walk around the classroom at wonder what the
objects are. They will not ask questions about the objects but, instead, write on the
numbered sticky notes what they believe each object is for.
We will discuss everyones guesses, noting similarities, differences, and how hard it
was to guess the object without asking questions.
Next, students will be given two minutes to discuss with their table-mates a few
questions they could ask to help them identify object #1.
Students will ask questions about the object; I will prompt students to ask deeper
questions, referring to the question starter anchor chart as needed.
We will do this for each of the objects.

Teaching (5 minutes)
I will tell the students, Today I am going to teach you the importance of asking
questions about things you wonder to learn more about things you dont know.
I will introduce the learning and language objectives.
I will reread a newspaper article we read during Morning Meeting on Grahamtastic,
stopping at certain points to model I know statements and I wonder
questions.
I will add my statements and questions to a chart under know and want to know.

Active Engagement (8 minutes)

I will tell students that it is there turn to try I know statements and I wonder
questions.
I will continue reading the article, asking students to give me a thumbs-up gesture
when they are ready to turn and talk to a partner about something they wonder.
Students will turn and talk to a partner about their statement and question. I will
move around, listening to groups.
I will call students back together and we will discuss the various things I heard,
adding the information to our know and want to know chart.

Link (1 minute)
I will instruct students that they are going to be returning to their seats to work with
an elbow partner to come up with a statement and question for each student.
Students will return to their desks. They will each be given two sticky notesone
for their statement and one for their question.

Small Group Work (10 minutes)
I will reread the newspaper article from start to finish.
Students will be given eight minutes to confer with their partner and write one
statement and one question per student. I will provide a copy of the article for each
pair.
Students will add their statement and question to the chart.
I will walk around while students are discussing and listen in on conversations,
aiding and pushing students further, as necessary:
I will visit AA, NR, HH, and KL, JC first, reminding them to use the question
starter word anchor chart. I will ask, first, what they already know about the
organization. If they are still having difficulty selecting one statement, I will
narrow it down by topic, focusing on the VGo robot or iPad.
I may ask students if there are any tools in the classroom they could use to
help them ask a question (such as the question starter anchor chart or
graphic organizer)
I will ask students to refer directly to the article if they arent sure where to
start. If they are having further trouble I will ask them to pick one specific
subtopic in the article, such as the VGo robot.
I will ask certain students to share their statement or question during the
share. I will be looking for students who use a variety of question starter
words and talk about different aspects of the organization.

Sharing (5 minutes)
The selected students will present their statements and questions.
Students will have the opportunity to ask further questions of these students.
I will aid the conversation further with the following questions:
Why do you wonder that?
How might you find the answer to your question?
What do you already know about that topic?
