Students explore the question; what happens if we have too much sugar in our
diets? Responses should focus around diseases such as diabetes, dental
cavities and obesity.
Teacher explains to students that in todays lesson they will learn how to read
food labels to help them know if a food is healthy or not.
Share the YouTube presentation Label Reading 101 (6 minutes) How to select
healthy food quickly.

Reading labels can be difficult to understand at first but with practise students
will gain the skills. For todays lesson students will focus on the sugar content
of the drink.
Allocate a different commercial drink container to students. If these are not
available, labels from online can be used.
Reading a drink label activity. Students are given a drink to study or students
can select their own. It is best if students can study a beverage they would
normally drink. Answer questions about their food label. (Drink label activity
sheet attached).
Students work individually, with a partner or in a small group to determine
how much sugar is in their beverage.
Graphing Activity-After recording their data on the activity sheet students
will construct a graph to represent the amount of sugar in each container. This
can be hand drawn or constructed using an online tool.
Students are to identify the healthiest drink or alternatively they could
identify the unhealthiest drink.
Class discussion- How much sugar is too much and why? Class suggest
healthy drinks they should be drinking. Milk, water, fresh fruit and vegetable
juices.
In conclusion teacher reinforces the importance of reading food labels to
determine if a drink/food is healthy or not.
Assessment Opportunities:
Student questions and answers in class and group discussions.
Student recording sheet- How Much Sugar is in Your Drink?
Construction of a column graph.
Extension Activity/Lesson 2:
Watch Jamie Olivers Sugar Rush Documentary.
Students answer questions based on the documentary. (See attached)
Follow up with class discussion.
