Teacher-Led Group: Readers Theater

In this group, Miss Gross will work with her group of students to read books that are at each students
developmental reading level. Each student will have a book with different highlighted parts and will
read their assigned part. The teacher will work with the group to support their reading, and to help
them act out the story throughout the week. They will prepare to present their story to the class at
the end of the Word Study time on Friday. Miss Gross will rotationally work with groups weekly. The
first week, the Dolphins will work with the teacher on Readers Theater and present on Friday to the
class. The next week, the Starfish will work with Miss Gross and present. The presentation of readers
theater will have students in the front of the classroom. Together, their group will read the book
selected for them to the class. When the book has been read, viewers (other students) will raise their
hands and give compliments to the readers. As a class, we will come up with compliments in the
beginning of the year to determine what is appropriate to say. These comments should reflect the
reading that was done by the students. Each member of the readers theater group will receive a
compliment by viewer.
Teacher-Led Group
Miss Gross will work with each group individually everyday on different word study activities that
might be a little more challenging for each group of students, but within their zone of proximal
development. These activities will be worked on by the students with teacher guidance during this
time.
Independent Technology Time
During this time, students will work independently on the class-set of iPads completing word-study
games pre-selected by the teacher for their developmental spelling level. Students can choose a spot
in the room to work to do their assigned activities. There will also be downloaded books that the
students can read or have read to them on the iPads for a whisper or silent reading activity. Here are a
few sample websites with activities that we would choose for our students:
www.starfall.com
www.abcmouse.com
www.pbskids.org
Miss Fogelman in the Classroom
Mrs. Fogelman will be utilized throughout the classroom during the word study activity time. She will
float around, supporting and assisting students, making sure every student knows what to do and to
help keep students on task.
Word Study Games
Every Friday will be a set time for word study games. During this time, students will work in a small
group and play games that are in their developmental reading and spelling level. Most of these games
will be activities found in Words Their Way that are pre-picked by the teacher and appropriate for
each developmental level. While the games will stay the same through multiple weeks, the words will
differ depending on the developmental level of each student. Here is an example of one weeks word
study games:

Spin Game
Students lay out lowercase letter cards face up and spin a spinner with corresponding upper case
letters. The spinning student then picks up the corresponding lowercase letter card and orally
identifies the letter. This takes place until all the cards have been identified. Students can also be
required to write down the lowercase letter in addition to orally identifying it.
Beginning and End Dominoes
This game is a picture sort to match initial and final consonant sounds. Students draw sets of five
domino pairs. They then try to match the ends of the domino pairs to other domino pairs that they
have based off of the sounds of the initial and final consonants. They take turns drawing pairs and
take turns adding pairs to the array.
Sheep in a Jeep Game
Student spins and moves that number of spaces on the game board. The player reads the word that
they land on and adds a sheep to the jeep by saying or writing a word that rhymes with that word. A
player who reads the word incorrectly must move back a space. The students alternate turns and the
first player to finish wins.
Pair Them Up
Students match up unusual plurals in a game of Memory or Concentration. Cards with unusual pairs
are shuffled and laid face down. Each player turns over 2 cards at a time. If the cards match, the
player keeps them and turns over two more until all of the cards are matched.
Word Wall Activity
Students will work with the word wall sight words.
Word Sort
Students can work together or alone on their word sort each day. The students will work to sort their
words of the week. Each day, they will complete a different sort. Here is the schedule for the sorts:
Tuesday:
Closed Sort
Wednesday:
Open Sort
Thursday:
Color, Cut and Glue into Word Study Notebook Sort
(must be completed individually)
Writing:
Students will take out their writing folders and continue working on books that they are creating.
Students will start drawing pictures to tell their story. Each picture will include details
