Reflection from prior lesson:
Students read the story Vaqueros: The American Cowboys yesterday in
class and finished after class time if needed. They know their homework for spelling
and grammar are due later in the week.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.5.2

Determine two or more main ideas of a text and explain how they are supported
by key details; summarize the text.
Lesson Objectives:

Students will be able to main ideas of a story with 100%

A. The Lesson
1. Introduction (5-10 minutes)

I will get everyones attention by saying


o 1 2 eyes on me
I will then say to the 5th graders
o I need everyone to bring out their books
o Turn to page 696
o asked their neighbors what page it is if they did not hear

2. Content Delivery (25 minutes)

Once there
o We will analysis the book once more.
o What do we think it is about the title/pictures
Class discussion
o What do we know from reading so far?

Ones who actually read it


I will then say
o I want everyone to group up and reread it in groups
o Talk about what is going on in the story
o Why are they doing what they are doing
While this is happening I will be going around the classroom
o Each group I will have some form of discussion about the story (open-ended
questions)
Where are you now?
What is going on in the story?
What are the characters thinking?
What would you be thinking if that was you?
Tell me more.
Can you relate to them at all

Around 11:00 Ill say


o Once done you can come back to your seats and work on yesterdays homework
if you have not finished it.

3. Closure (5-10 minutes)

o You can all return to your seats, put away everything and look up at me
After everyone has finished I will have everyone look up at me
o I will get their attention from saying
o 5th graders eyes on me
We will have a class discussion covering the details of the story
