Student Board Representative

Introduction
The Vacaville Unified School District Governing Board consists of seven
members. School Board elections are held each odd numbered year with
members elected to serve staggered four-year terms. Some basic Board functions
are to establish the policies which schools of the District are to administer and to
select the Superintendent and staff who will implement those policies. The Board
is responsible for the organization and operation of the District in conformity
with the rules and regulations of the State Board of Education, and the laws of
the State and Federal Government.

Why I Chose This Project

Experience
As a Student Board Representative, my duties include writing and
presenting a report of all student activities, attending each board
meeting, giving a student advisory vote on some of the agenda items,
and offering feedback for the board to consider when making a vote.
My reports include reflections on past events, information about
student recognition, grants the school receives, and upcoming events. I
usually gather the information I present by speaking with Mrs. Henry,
Mrs. Ohara, and Coach Threets. In addition, I look at the daily bulletin
to see if there are any upcoming events that I may have missed.

Evaluation
My Supervisor, Mrs. Henry, gave me a thorough evaluation. She
mentioned my biggest problem, over scheduling. I have a tendency
to volunteer my time away, until I have no time left for myself.. I
believe that with proper scheduling, my life would be more
manageable. Despite my over scheduling, Ive persevered and
completed my job as a Student Board Representative.
My Supervisor also stated that I represent the School with
professionalism, pride, and grace. I think that Ive certainly tried my
best to express those qualities. I think Ive done a good job as a
Student Board member. Ive shown up to every meeting on time and
prepared. I pay attention to the conversation so that I can form an
opinion and express that opinion.

Personal Growth
My yellow personality showed at my project site, because I
communicated with several people in order to get the information to
the School Board. I also am better equipped at speaking in public. I got
along well with others and that really helps when you have to
communicate with people for your project.
My career assessment didnt really match what Im looking for in a job.
It was correct in what jobs I wouldnt be interested in but somehow
missed the mark with my interests. It recommended that I be an artist or
a grade school teacher. I have no skill with painting, photography, or
sketching. In fact Im quite unskilled in those areas. However, I do
want to be a music teacher, which is related to art and teaching.

Reflection
Ive really enjoyed my time as Buckinghams Student Board
Representative. If I could continue being the Board Representative, I
would gladly take the opportunity.
My experience going into the project was one part scared and the
other part nerves. I was hoping I wouldnt mess up and that I would
make it through my first meeting. Now, Im confident in my job and
I know whats expected of me. Im not afraid of failure anymore
because I know if I mess up, I can just get right back up.
Overall, Ive improved my public speaking skills, become better
organized, and have been given another opportunity to learn from
my mistakes. I will become better organized and manage my time
better. With these skills, I am now ready for graduation.
