Needs Assessment
Burbank Elementary
is a Fine Arts Magnet
school serving Pre-K
through fifth grade.
In the past two years,
we have been
increasing reading
performance through
implementation of
literacy best
practices for
instruction. In areas
of K-2 we are
implementing a new
research based
curriculum titled
Units of Study in
Reading and Writing.
Teachers will need a
lot of support and
coaching, and we
only have 1 coach
and an instructional
coordinator. We
needed to find a way
to regularly support
the instructional
implementation and
secure fidelity to
implementation in
As an instructional
coordinator at
Burbank Elementary,
it is within my job
description to help
my content area
achieve higher
scores and STAAR
distinctions. The
campus principal
assigned this project
to me so I may assist
the entire K-2 staff.
The assigned
objective was to
educate the teachers
on the Teachers
College Units of
Study and
instructional
techniques to ensure
rigorous teaching
and learning
experiences, and
engagement of
students in
independent reading.
Our campus goal is
to increase the
reading levels of K-2

1. Bringing staff
together and
asking them to
take on a new
instructional
routine can be
a challenge.
They will need
support and
encouragement
. One must be
able to give them
the tools they
need to
implement the
program fully
which requires a
lot of an

leader. Teachers

30% based on
reading levels, so
we had to build
trust that this
would work, and
there was nothing
to fear about
taking this risk.

Next year this

can be very scary
to try something

of people or
