Competency Standard #1 - Promoting Child Development and Learning
Competency Standard number one identifies childrens developmental milestones. This standard
help educators focus on the childs strengths and competencies. This standard requires Early
Childhood Educators to be aware that all areas of development and learning is important to
young children. The standard focuses on the development of the whole child and recognizes how
early experiences can move children through developmental sequences at varying rates. The
standard focuses on how each child is affected differently by social, cultural, and environmental
influences, and promotes safe environments for active learning.
The artifact I chose is from CHD 205 - Guiding Behavior of Children. This course explored the
role of early childhood educators in supporting the emotional and social development of young
children in various settings and included management strategies that support and encourage
prosocial behavior. I have learned from this class assignment that children go through
developmental stages at various rates. As they develop and discover themselves guidance will be
required to help them regulate their social and emotional development. I have learned as an early
childhood educator that children need to trust care givers in order to build their self-esteem. As
teachers we need to support and respect the child where they are in their learning and
development and build positive relationships. We can reflect on the childs learning and
development through communication with families and build upon the childs competence level
by utilizing the Virginia Foundation Blocks of Early Learning.
For standard one I have learned that children need to be supported in their physical, cognitive,
language, social and emotional development. As early childhood educators we need to structure
the environment to provide a safe place for active movement of young children and understand
that children need to be provided with a variety of safe, stimulating, interesting materials, and
environment to explore. To promote child development and learning educators need to
understand that children need consistent comfort and reassurance for optimal learning. Children
need opportunities to play or interact with other children from their own or other cultural
backgrounds. I have learned to spend quality time with each child and learn their way of
communicating while trying to teach them language skills. I will continue to work toward
understanding the families cultural beliefs and values so that I can understand the familys
actions, attitudes, and behavior, as well as their dreams and hopes for their childs development
and learning.
