The Princess
Bride
"to blave" means "to bluff,"

By Brendan Kercher
A true story of love, life, and the
pursuit of happiness against all odds,
The Princess Bride written by William
Goldman and directed and produced
by Rob Reiner. Is a classic romantic
adventure bursting with; a beautiful
princess, princes (both good and evil),
villains, evil geniuses, giants, evil
creatures, sword fights, revenge,
kidnapping, true love, and yes even a
white horse. All told with a humor that
leaves you wanting more, but not sure
if you can handle the side splitting,
swash buckling, and romantic antics of
this great story. I believe any fan of
the movie will tell you, it is the film's
whimsical, irreverent, pervasive

The story is set up and told as a fairy

tale to a sick young boy (Fred Savage)
who lays in bed while hearing the tale
from his grandfather, and narrator
(Peter Falk). The story starts off with
the tale of young love. A young farm
hand Westley (Cary Elwes) and the
beautiful maiden Buttercup (Robin
Wright, in her breakthrough role).
Westley waits on Buttercups every
word all while exclaiming, As you
wish! The young couple is separated,
then Westley and Buttercup, the two
star crossed lovers, have their world
swept into chaos when its believed
that Westley was killed at sea by the
Dread Pirate Roberts. Buttercup left to
fend for herself is swept away by the
Evil Prince Humperdink (Chris
Sarandon). Whos evil rule over the
land is hidden from her view and shes
made to believe otherwise.
Upon Westleys return from the dead,
he is confronted by Prince
Humperdincks band of heathens. A
master swordsman, Inigo Montoya
(Mandy Patinkin), who on his own
quest for the man with 6 fingers who
killed his father, a mastermind Vizzini
(Wallace Shawn) whose wits may lead
him to his own demise, and a giant

Fezzik played by none other than

(Andre the Giant). Once he wins over
this crowd of would be villains (whats
left of them
anyway), they
unit with him on
an epic quest to
free his true love
from the grips of
the evil Prince
Humperdink. In
this process he is

This is a story about true love, true

love is the greatest thing in the world.
Except for a nice MLT, a mutton,
lettuce and tomato sandwich, where
the mutton is nice and lean and the
tomato is ripe. They're so perky, I love
that. But that's not what he said! He
distinctly said "to blave." And, as we
all know, "to blave" means "to bluff,"
huh? So you're probably playing cards,
and he cheated. In one of the films
most memorable scenes, is the
appearance of Billy Crystal and Carol
Kane as the Miracle-Man Max and his
wife. It has been reported that in the

middle of filming this scene, Reiner

was forced to leave the set, because
Crystal's improvisations were causing
him to laugh to the point of being sick.
This line from Miracle Max who was
jaded by the evil prince in an attempt
to get out of helping the would be hero
come back to life to rescue his fair
princess from marrying the evil prince,
shows his fear of the evil prince, and
to avoid further persecution, he lies
about what Westleys dying words
were.
This story takes you on a ride through
cliffs as high as sky scrapers, woods
with fire pits, ferocious giant rats, and
quick sand, torture chambers, and
storming castle walls with flaming
giant pirates. If this doesnt enthrall
you or drive your fancy, then throw in
swashbuckling sword fights, revenge,
miracles, and true love! This
rollercoaster of a story will keep you
guessing whats next, and have you on
the edge of your seat cheering for the
underdog. From beginning to end, The
Princess Bride is a fantastic,
enchanted experience that constantly
brings out uncontrollable laughter and
simultaneously drags the audience
into, magnificent, and almost nostalgic
world of folklore that leave you like
Fred Savage, wanting more.
