An Examination of Language
Background: As your experience in AP Language & Composition comes to a close, it is time for you to consider the
complex issues that language encompasses and expresses. Throughout this course, we have covered the following units:
Foundations of Language, Consequences of Language, The Manipulation of Language, Foreign Language in America, The
Language of War, The Price of Language, and The Language of Violence.
Assignment Overview: You will create your own unit/presentation/ examination about language and analyze that
area of language using all of the skills learned this year. Please see the Course Map and Course Questions to guide you
in this. Your talk will emulate the various types of media we see today, such as Ted Talks, Podcasts, YouTube blogs, etc.
Criteria for Success:
Things to Consider:
Staging This includes lighting, background, camera angle and more. Every single detail in your video
contributes to the ultimate impression you make on your audience.
Personal Introduction How will you introduce yourself in a way that immediately connects with your audience
and gains their trust? How will you make yourself credible?
Voice Inflection/Tone You must sound interested and passionate about your topic if you want to engage your
audience to listen to what you have to say.
Due Dates:
April 21
Proposal You will make a formal proposal stating what your examination of Language Unit is and, why
it is important to you and how it encompasses texts/skills learned from the course.
April 26th
TED TALK OVERVIEW: This is where you preview the core idea, texts used, presentation hook, and how
you will visually and verbally tell your story.
May 16th
Script This is the written version of your presentation, including your introduction, all facts (cited!), and
your closing words in the chronological way you plan to present them.
