CONTINUITY LOG SHEET


THE CONTINUITY LOG SHEET IS A DOCUMENT
USEFUL AND INDISPENSABLE, IT ENSURES FILM
CONTINUITY, IT ALSO HELPS TO TRANSMIT
INFORMATION FROM THE SHOOTING TO THE
EDITING, WHICH OFTEN OCCURS SEVERAL
MONTHS AFTER THE SHOOTING.

Continuity log is divided into three parts:
The header (1) will contain all the technical information

of the movie, pictures, cameras or sequence.


The central zone (2) concerns each take information.
Finally the bottom of the document (3) will involve some

additional elements such as dialogues, allowing the


editor to navigate easier through the information.

1. TECHNICAL
INFORMATIONS
THE HEADER OF THIS CONTINUITY LOG
SHEET WILL BE THE FIRST MARKER FOR THE
EDITOR, YOULL FIND THE FILM TITLE, THE
PRODUCTION NAME, AND MANY OTHER
VITAL INFORMATION WHICH ARE DETAILED
HERE.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION
The header of this continuity log sheet will be the first marker for the editor,

youll find the film title, the production name, and many other vital
information which are detailed here.
TITLE :
It is of course the title of the movie, sometimes it can be a provisory title
when the film production company has not chosen a definitive title.
Sometimes you can put a codename rather than the real title of the film, it

can prevent the shooting from people who might be to curious.


PRODUCTION :
We write there the name of the film production company which handle the
project, when there are several companies we usually write the name of the
delegate company.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION
DIRECTOR :
The director of the film, if there are two persons we just last names.
CAMERA :
If you have only one camera to make your film, this field can be optional.
If on the contrary you have more than one camera to film, you can either

writer a number, either the name of the camera.


If for instance youre filming simultaneously the same sequence with three

cameras, every continuity log sheet will be associated to a specific camera.


If otherwise you have two different cameras, you can fill this field with the

camera model (like RED or GoPro).

TECHNICAL INFORMATION
ROLL :
This field will certainly disappear in the years to come, it concerns only nondigital cameras, it is where you indicate the roll number of your camera, the
roll is where the film is kept from the dark.
It is especially usefull when comes the time to develop it in a specialized

laboratory.
If you have a digital camera with multiple hard drives or memory cards, you

can write down in this field the number of your card or your hard drive.
LENS :
It refers to the focal length used by the director of photography to create the
shot, its expressed in millimeters mm), for a sequence shot in wide angle
lens, well write for instance 24mm.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION
MUTE / SOUND :
This information indicates to the editor if a sound was recorded while filming,
just tick the box corresponding to the situation.
HEIGHT :
Une this field to indicate the distance of the camera from the ground, it can be
useful when youre using a jib to film.
DISTANCE :
This is the distance from the camera of the person or object being filmed, you
can specify this information in meters or use the terms proximity, semiproximity or distant.
SET :
Indicate there the place or set where the action is located.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION
AMBIANCE :
In this area, you have to tick two boxes.
The ambiance refers to the light and place of of the sequence,
if the action takes place in an apartment in broad daylight,
you must select INT. and DAY..
On the contrary, if the action takes place in a park at night,
you should check EXT. and NIGHT. easy, isnt it?
DATE :
It is nothing more than the day of shooting.
It is especially useful when youre filming a same sequence
during several days.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION
SEQ / SHOT :
This information is absolutely essential, it also appears on
the slate.
Seq refers to the number of the sequence to which is
associated the shot being filmed.
Note that if youre changing your shot, you have to take a
new continuity log sheet.
It may be the most important principle : the continuity log
sheet is only associated to a unique shot.

2. TAKES
THIS PART OF THE DOCUMENT ALLOWS THE
SCRIPT SUPERVISOR TO PROVIDE SPECIFIC
INFORMATION ABOUT EVERY TAKE MADE
FOR THE SAME SHOT, INDEPENDENTLY
FROM EACH OTHER.

THE TAKES
This part of the document well allow the script supervisor

to provide specific information about every take made for


the same shot, independently from each other.
TAKE :
Each take receives a number following the shooting order.
The script supervisor usually surrounds the number

corresponding to the take considered good for the editing.

THE TAKES
COMMENT :
This area is dedicated to the comments related to the actual take,
every specific information should be writen there.
For example you can write Boom microphone in the picture or

Focus problem.
You can also write there the recorded sound file number provided by

the production sound mixer or by the boom operator.


TIMING :
The script supervisor times each take and then write down the
duration in this specific column.

THE TAKES
FLITER(S) :
The director of photography often adds filters to his camera, it may be a
polarizing filter, a neutral density filter (ND) or any other type of filter useful
for the picture creation.
It is in this column that you write this information down. As for the focal

length, just ask a camera assistant to tell you the filters used.
APERTURE :
We record here the iris aperture of the lens. We usually write the aperture
this way : F/xx.
Beyond the technical aspect, the aperture could be F/1.4 or F/16. Note that

the lower the number will be, the more therell be light coming into the lens,
and more the picture will be enlightened.

3. FOOTER
THIS LAST PART OF THE DOCUMENT
CONCERNS THE ADDITIONAL DETAILS ABOUT
THE SHOT. THIS IS WHERE WE LIST ALL THE
INFORMATION WE COULDNT WRITE
SOMEWHERE ELSE ON THE DOCUMENT.

FOOTER

FOOTER
This last part of the document concerns the additional details

about the shot. This is where you list all the information you
couldnt write somewhere else on the document.
SHOT DESCRIPTION :
This area allows you to briefly describe the action, some persons
also add schemes like scene-blocking, it is as you wish.
DIALOGUES :
You can indicate here which dialogues are precisely filmed in the
shot.
We traditionally record the first and last line of dialogue filmed.
