Competency Standard #6 - Becoming a Professional

As an Early Childhood Educator I am encouraged to participate in professional development

training opportunities to enhance my abilities in becoming a professional teacher and promoting
the development and learning of children. I am encouraged to help build family and community
relationships. I strive to build my observation and documentation skills to assess young children.
As a professional I am encouraged to use developmentally effective approaches to connect with
children and families, and use age appropriate content to build meaningful curriculum. I am
encouraged by this standard to provide care and education for the whole child, and provide a safe
and secure environment. I am encouraged through this standard to continue to update my
knowledge and skills through the ongoing process of professional development training on
research, practice, and technology.
For this standard I chose an artifact From CHD 270 - Administration of Child Care Programs.
The project focused on the knowledge content area of professionalism. The competency project
was to create an inclusive, bias-free, and diverse environment that values respect, reflective
thinking and an open exchange of professional ideas. The objective was to identify and apply
professional standards as they relate to professional development, professionalism, and program
management. I learned through this assignment that professionalism as it relates to having a biasfree and diverse environment means that diversity or multicultural education has to be a
continuous approach to working with children, parents, families, and colleagues every day.
Children in education programs should be aware of their own cultural background, and the
cultural background of children who are different from them. The children we are educating
should see themselves, their families, and their communities represented throughout the program
environment. As early childhood educators we should never be intolerant of others by seeking
out differences, but learn to enjoy and appreciate differences of others.
As a professional in Early Childhood Education I will focus my training on all children from
birth to eight years of age. I will include children with developmental delays and disabilities,
children whose families are culturally and linguistically diverse, and children from diverse socioeconomic groups. I recognize that all children have individual learning styles, strengths, and
needs. I plan to participate in professional development opportunities to enhance my
understanding of racial, ethnic, and cultural groups. I will continue to create the condition under
which children initiate conversation about differences and provide a setting for introducing
activities about inclusive, bias-free, and diverse environments. As a professional educator I will
be an advocate for children and their families, and will work toward making a difference in the
life of children.
