5-Year Technology Plan Flower High School

I. Introduction
Flower High School is located in Long Beach, CA and has a current enrollment of 1400 students.
This technology plan was created in order to push Flower High School into a 21st Century
learning environment and give teachers and students the skills they need to succeed in a
technologically advanced world. The plan shows the current technology and the needed new
technology in order to give students the advantage of digital literacy and media. The current
amount of technology in the school is low the only access the students have to technology is in
the computer lab in the library. Teachers do have computers in the classroom but they are used
primarily for their own use as they do not have any way to project anything onto the wall. Some
teachers have experimented with Bring Your Own Devices but do have the professional
development training or technical knowledge in place to assist the students or push the program
to the entire school. This plan will take 5 years to implement and provide professional
development for staff and teachers.

II. Goals
Student Centered Goals
1. Students become informed and ethical digital citizens and understand societal and
cultural practices related to technology. They show a positive attitude towards others in
the online world and practice safe and moral uses of information and technology.
2. Students will also learn to research and organize data through digital tools and
media. They evaluate, analyze and process data from digital sources and use technology
to make informed decisions using the appropriate digital tools and resources.
Teacher Centered Goals
1. Teachers will use technology to inspire student learning and creativity while also
modeling digital citizenship and responsibility. They will use technology to foster
collaborative tools, virtual environments, provide students with a multitude of formative
and summative assessments and develop a classroom that is culturally understanding
with a global awareness.
2. Teachers will also engage in professional growth and leadership through participating in
local and global learning communities.
School Centered Goals
1. The school will become a technologically advanced system allowing students and faculty
to grow personally and professionally. It will allow for community engagement through
parent involvement and give them the tools they need to understand technology and
help their children grow

III. Needs Assessment

Assessment Surveys
Technology Surveys were sent out to see what kind of experience students, teachers, and
parents had with technology either at home, school or public institutions, such as the public
library. 97% of the surveys were returned and assessed. The results are as follow and will be a
great help during the planning of technology integration:
Based on the assessment survey given to teachers and students, teachers are currently
not using a lot of technology in the classroom as they dont have projectors and are unable to
project anything from the computer and most teachers do not allow handheld devices in class
because they feel they are a distraction. Teachers do try to take their students to the library so
they have access to technology and can fulfill the core requirements but do not feel comfortable
helping students when they have questions.
Students in the school seem fairly comfortable with technology. 75% of the students
have their own tablet or laptop device to access the internet and 95% of students have smart
phones while 90% of students have access to the internet at home. Most of the students who
do not have Internet access at home know to use either the public or school library and only a
handful of students have never used public computers for the Internet. When asked what they
use to research for papers, 80% of students said they use either Google or Wikipedia while only
20% of students said they use the library research program either at the school or public library.
Parents had a fair amount of use with technology and 50% claimed to be proficient or an
expert when it came to new technologies and computers. Most of these parents worked in the
corporate environment and used computers to complete their jobs. The other 50% said they
had none or some expertise with computers. This may show that providing development
programs for technology would help them to teach their own children and assist them in their
schoolwork as well as providing them professional development for their own careers.
Planning Committee
Based upon the results of the assessment and district policy, a planning committee will be
assembled of faculty, teachers, administration and parents allowing for a broad range of views
and experience. The planning committee will be made up of the following:

1 Principal/Assistant Principal
1 Librarian/Library Media Teacher
4 Teachers
2 Parents
1 IT Administrator
District Technology Specialist

VI. Assessment & Evaluation

There will be multiple evaluation and assessments for students and teachers throughout the 5
years. These will ask questions about how the new technology is working, what they need as far
as software or hardware and any training needs that must be met before they can further
implement anything into their classrooms. The assessment and evaluation schedule will be as
follows:
Monthly Survey: Sent to faculty and staff. Questions regarding what technology is working,
whats not working, that they may need more training on and any suggestions for further
improvement.

further improvement. Parents will answer questions about what they see their children
struggling with and any suggestions for improvement. The end of year survey will also focus on if
any of the new technologies helped improve student learning and if any should be taken away.
The culmination survey includes questions about the outcome of the technology plan and if it
has helped to push Flower High School to a more technically advanced school.
