Lesson Title: _Introduction to Substitution_________________

Author _Hopwood_____ Grade__8_____________
Learning Objective: (see below)
I can solve a system of equations algebraically.
Curriculum Connection: Students will begin to solve equations algebraically today after
spending a few days solving them by graphing and a day of review of solving equations
with one variable.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.8.EE.C.8.B
Solve systems of two linear equations in two variables algebraically, and estimate solutions
by graphing the equations. Solve simple cases by inspection. For example, 3x + 2y = 5 and 3x
+ 2y = 6 have no solution because 3x + 2y cannot simultaneously be 5 and 6.
Knowledge of Students: Students by this point have been solving systems of equations
by graphing. It is a very visual model as they graph and then look for a point of
interception (or not) between the two lines. Today we will be begin to solve them
algebraically. This may be somewhat difficult for the students that struggled with
solving multi-step equations. I will start with a few warm-up problems where students
will just take a single number and put it in to an equation for a specific variable so
they get into the practice of substituting. Classes are shorter today because they will
have been doing testing all morning so the students may be a bit restless because of
this.

Assessment: Personal communication. There will be lots of discussion today on the steps
that need to be taken to solve systems of equations algebraically. I will talk with all
students and review work when they are doing practice problems after the lesson.
Selected response exit ticket for the end of class.

Instructional Strategies:
Whole class instruction- Students will take notes on their note sheets during
instruction from me.
Student Practice- Students will do practice problems as I circulate and can do checkins. I will create small groups for students that need the extra intense instruction.
Visual checking- Students will have the opportunity to graph their lines to check their
solutions.
Technology- Students who struggle with graphing, they will have the opportunity to
check using a graphing calculator or computer.

Lesson Procedure: (with time frames)

Opener (5 minutes)- Students will do some practice problems that focus on
solving equations, which is a review from yesterday and also to prepare them
for beginning to solve by substitution.
Questions on essay (10 minutes)- I will give students time to work on their
essays which are due tomorrow. They can also ask questions if they have any. I
will walk around and help students individually if they need it.
Instruction on topic (15 minutes)- I will begin to introduce how to solve systems
of equations algebraically. This is why we reviewed solving multistep equations
yesterday. They will start very basic with 1 equation in slope/intercept form
with a simple y or x= a whole number. So they are just inputing one piece of
data and solving to find the unique solution. I will ask students what their
definition of substitution is. We will have a discussion about what a substitute
teacher does. They stand in for a regular teacher and take their place. Its a
relatable idea for them because they have seen substitute teachers. Towards
the end the problems will get more difficult with two examples in slope/
intercept form so they will then have to substitute the first value they get to
get the other value, either the x or y. Students will be able to check their
answers through graphing, or possibly with a graphing calculator.
Student practice (8 minutes)- Students will have time to work on practice
problems individually. These problems will become homework. This class period is
short because of the testing so they wont be able to have too much time to do
practice problems.
Closing (2 minutes)- We will have a short discussion review on solving systems
algebraically. I will use remind students that one equation is just standing in for
another equation. Exit ticket will be completed as well.

Lesson Reflections:

Substitution: Systems of equations

Opener: Solve for x

1. 2x-4=8

2. x+4=4x-5

3. -3x=5+2x

3. 9x=0

We are now given two equations: What do we do?

1. y=3x+2
x=2

2. y=4x-5
y=3

3. y=3x+6
y=2x

4. y=4x+7
y=-4x-1

5. y=1/2x+4
y=5/2x+8
