Post Secondary Trip Wires
Summary of the article:
In todays society and work field, having a college education is crucial if you
want to succeed, especially economically. It is proven that those with a college education
will generally make more than those with just a high school education. But, the question
is: If its proven that college graduates make more than high school graduates, why are
students still not pursuing post secondary education? The answer is complex, but comes
down to one simple thing: inequality. Basically, those who come from lower
socioeconomic backgrounds have a harder time achieving just a high school diploma, and
an even harder time getting to college.
Paraphrase of the article:
Unemployment among young adults is at a record high due to the number of
college dropouts. Students tend to dropout of college due to financial instability and the
lack of a stable support system. The problem many people are finding though, is that
many jobs are now requiring some sort of a college education. That may be easy for
those who have support and the financial stability to attend and graduate from college,
but for those who do not, they are stuck in the post secondary tripwires. The Prichard
Committee Student Voice Team examined some of these tripwires, saying that although
they may be invisible, they are what hinder students from achieving a higher education.

Final Reflection Piece
Writing a research paper is hard work, and Ive been writing them since my first
semester of high school. Each time I write one, it doesnt get easier, because every topic
presents its own difficulties. Like most of the papers Ive written though, an exploratory
process comes first. Writing different entries for the daybook about my IP Project and
thoughts, made me reflect on the paper at an even deeper level. I was able to compare
and contrast my thoughts on why I changed my IP Question, through a pro vs. con way. I
looked at entries on why I chose certain questions and it helped me to be able to settle on
a final IP Question. Sometimes I tend to get lost in my own writing, especially a research
paper, because it can become so conformative, and my voice will get lost. So, being able

to sit and write in a more informal setting, in the daybook, allowed me to express my
thoughts and concerns on the topic and research in which I was writing about. I also felt
like I was starting to get in a rut in my writing style and in my paper. So, writing and
doing more extensive research made me realize that I was limiting myself. I began to try
and find new research and challenge myself to explore new topics within my larger topic
of student voice. Finally, I feel like writing and reflecting about each step of my IP
project made me a lot more self aware of my own writing. Sometimes it got kind of
repetitive, but I tried my best to explore different stages of my writing. Overall, Im glad
I wrote about the different stages of my writing and research. I felt like it made me a
stronger writer and researcher overall, and Im excited to see how my final paper turns
out.
