Grade Level: Second

Date: Taught
Group Size: Small Group
Subject/Lesson Topic: Science/ Weather
Objectives: (TLW:)
The learner will use a newspaper clipping to analyze the temperature and use
this clipping to complete a bar graph that was already made for them.
Standards/GLEs:

Analyze recorded daily temperatures and weather conditions from newspapers,

television, the Internet, and home/outdoor thermometers (ESS-E-A4)
Gather, record, and graph weather data (e.g., precipitation, wind speed, wind direction,
temperature) using appropriate instruments (ESS-E-A4)
Contextual Factors:

The school is located in community with a majority of low income and middle
income students. The area has majority African American and Hispanic students.
The class contains 24 enrolled students and one inclusion student that is not
enrolled in the class. There are 15 boys and 10 girls in the class.
This classroom contains a variety of children. There are 4 children with IEPs in
the classroom. Two students without IEPs receive speech accommodations. Two
other students also have a 504 document in place. Two other students are ESL
students.
There are three African American males in this group and one Caucasian female.
One of these students receive additional speech help and one of them has a 504 in
place.

Teacher Materials/Resources:

Student Materials/Resources:
Weather report from a newspaper
Pre-made graph
Crayons
Pencils
Technology Integration:
I will show a video to give children a brief review of temperature
Family/Community Connection or Extension:
I will send home a letter to the parents that has an activity that the kids can
do at home if the parent wants them to.

Pre-Assessment:
When doing my whole group lesson, the children knew what temperature
was. However, some children had problems when I talked about Fahrenheit
and Celsius. So, I decided to design a lesson that is about temperature and
thermometers to cover this topic with the students that were having
problems.
Lesson Procedure and Activities:
Introduction:
Connect temperature back to a connection to the childrens lives.
o Ask them if their parents watch the news or if they have ever
seen a weather report on TV.
Play a video that will serve as a brief review.
Have a quick discussion with the children to serve as a further
review:
o Review what a thermometer looks like and what it is used for
o Talk about the difference between Fahrenheit and Celsius.
o Display a weather report that is published in the newspaper
on the Smart Board
Have a discussion with the kids about what to find on
the report, how we use it, and how to read the report
Activities:
Give each child a weather report from a newspaper
Ask the children to read over the report for a few minutes
o After they have read it, give them a few minutes to share
with a partner what they notice about the report.
o Listen to the students sharing to assess if are ready to move
on to making the graph or if they need one-on-one attention
to review the task again
If children need more attention, ask them to listen to
the lesson and you will review the report with them
again before they begin their graph.
Give the children the graph.
o Before they begin, explain the directions and ask the children
if they have any questions.
Explain that they will be making a bar graph using
their weather report. Demonstrate on your paper how
to draw one of the bars.
o Allow the children to begin after all the questions have been
answered.
As the children work, help any students that need
help. If no children need help, use this time to assess
what they are doing.
Closure:
After everyone has finished doing their graphs, I will ask the
children to share their graph with the group.

After the children have shared, we will talk about the graphs. We
will discuss the similarities and differences between their graphs.
We will end the lesson by putting the graph and the weather report
on a piece of construction paper. I will let them decorate their
paper.

Differentiation:
The students that will be working in this group are students that did not grasp
the concept of temperature. So, I need to consider children that have
difficulties in other areas.
For children that cannot read, I will go over their weather report with
them explaining what the information says and how to make their
graph.
For the children that are having trouble with this assignment, I will
have weather reports that I made up. These will only have numbers
that have a zero or a five at the end. This should make graphing the
numbers easier.
For children that breeze by the activity and are not challenged, I will
give them the same weather report that is in Celsius instead of
Fahrenheit. Then, they will have to graph that weather report. When
both of them are complete, I will ask then to explain how they are
similar and how they are different on a piece of paper.
Formative Assessment/Evaluation:
To assess if the children have grasped the concept, I will look at their graphs
and make sure they match the weather report. I will also use observations to
assess if they have grasped the concept.

Temperature
Dear parents/guardians,
This week we will be studying weather. Today, your child worked in a small group
learning about temperature. We learned how to graph temperatures to make a bar graph. If
you would like to work on temperature with your child at home, here is a similar activity you
can do with them. To begin, allow your child to fill out the graph below for one or two weeks.
All they will need to do is put the temperature in the box labeled with the correct day. They
can find the temperatures by looking online, watching the news with you, or they can fill
them out each day at school when we go over the weather for that day. Then with the
provided bar graph template, allow them to make a bar graph out of their results. You can
have a discussion with them about how the temperature changed and how they got their own
results. Please consider allowing them to do this activity. It will allow them to practice
graphing and give them a better understanding of temperature. Please contact me with any
questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Melissa LeSage
