Rationale Statement
Statement of Standard One Learner Development
The teacher understands how learners grow and develop, recognizing that patterns of learning
and development vary individually within and across the cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional,
and physical areas, and designs and implements developmentally appropriate and challenging
learning experiences. (NJPTSB, 2014, pg.1)
Name of Artifact: Personal Philosophy
Date of Artifact: February 2016
Course: Education Field Experience EDUC 230-01
Rationale Statement:
The artifact I was assigned to do was the Personal Philosophy of Teaching and Learning.
To start, I reflected on my past knowledge of how classrooms where I was the student were set
up. I also revealed a time when I had a teacher that taught me exactly how not to be when it
comes time to teach in my own classroom. The purpose of this assignment was to help create my
own person philosophy and begin to think about the ways in which I will run my own class one
day. I got to think about the different learning styles and philosophies and how I will incorporate
them into my classroom. This artifact directly correlates to standard 1.2 Essential Knowledge,
because it talks about the ways in which the teacher understands the students needs and uses that
knowledge to create appropriate lesson plans. The teacher understands how learning occurs
how learners construct knowledge, acquire skills, and develop disciplined thinking processes
and knows how to use instructional strategies that promote student learning. By knowing this, I
can construct my lessons accordingly so that all of my students get the most out of my class,
regardless of their learning style.
While creating my personal philosophy for teaching, I took some time to consider my
own experiences as well as what I see during my student observation. The classroom that I am in
now uses a lot of the techniques that I mentions. Such as the fact that most of the classrooms are
sorted into groups rather than rows, and even the rooms that are in rows eventually the students

get up and work with one other person at minimum. The biggest thing that I learned about being
a teacher from this assignment was that there are so many techniques that teachers can use, but I
think that this helped me realize that not everyone learns the same way that I do. I was able to
thoroughly reflect on my own experiences and come up with ways that will help every student
get the most out of my class, and that everyone will walk away knowing something new.
This assignment will be used in my classroom every single day that I teach. A personal
philosophy is an important part of being a teacher, because whether you think about it or not, the
way that you teach is your philosophy in itself. I will keep a copy of my personal philosophy so
that throughout the years I can go back and change things based on my experiences as a teacher.
This will help me improve every year because I will be able to reflect on my own teaching styles
and figure out what works and what doesnt when it comes to my students learning.
