Welcome to a brand new

academic year and as you can see
from my greeting, the big news
of the new year is the departments name change to
Computer and Information
Technology which occurred
during the summer. Acting on the
recommendation of the Information Technology subcommittee of the Deans Industrial Advisory Council, the department
initiated the name change to
more accurately reflect the departments mission as
information technology has
become more recognized in the
marketplace as the umbrella term
for the industry in which we
operate. Furthermore, peer programs such as our Purdue-West

Lafayette counterpart and those

at Rochester Institute of Technology and Brigham Young University have created a special interest group in information technology education SIGITE affiliated
with the Association for Computing Machinery. Several of our
faculty presented papers at the
fourth annual Conference on IT
Curriculum at Purdues West
Lafayette campus in midOctober. Look for CIT to embrace even more of SIGITEs
activities in the future!

Distance education courses

continue to have major appeal
to our non-traditional students.
Currently, DE courses represent
15% of the total credit hours
offered in the department. Most
of our Web-based courses are
packaged in two Certificate
courses the Information Technology (IT) Certificate and the E1

Commerce Development Certificate. The first Certificate is an

entry point into the development of data driven Web Sites.
The E-Commerce Certificate
pretty much picks up where the
IT Certificate ends. This more
advanced certificate is also
intended for current application
developers who are tying to

make the transition to Webbased development practices.

Students have the option of
pursing either a .NET or Java
approach to Web development.
All of the courses in both programs can be taken totally over
the Web.
