ME
When I first came to college I was.

NWCC
I have gained from my training and
expectances
Better tools/gear

Rod + fly line

Bait
Target
Technique

Rod + Fly line

It is the backbone of the system
It is comparable to my strengths

Deliberative
Adaptability
Competition
Arranger
Achiever

During retreats as a facilitator groups require

Confidence
Patience
focus

Flies
There are many different types

Dry flies
Wet flies
Poppers
steamers

This can be related to skills and techniques

you have in your leadership tool box.

Technique
Casting technique is key.
Without good technique you cant present the
fly to the fish the in the correct manor.
Your frame of reference needs to see all relevant.

Technique that is transferable to facilitating

seeing the whole situation
Identifying strengths and weaknesses
Having goals

Target
This is where you want the fly to end up in
the river.
Very tied to casting technique
Relatable to being deliberative, awareness,
and goals both short and long distance
goals.
Where you start to put things together and
all your preparedness pays off.

Putting it all together

This is where we take all those tools,
the rod, fly line, flies.
Now its time to go fishing,
metaphorically speaking.
Taking groups through a retreat
requires all the skills previously
mentioned, and more.
There is an underlying theory and ideas
for facilitating challenge courses and fly
fishing,
Leadership theories- challenge and
support/experiential learning
Interpersonal and organizational
leadership- tracking fish behaviors/ being
an active listener
Inclusive- teaching about ethical fishing
Critical thinking- shot decision,
Self-leadership- dedication to practice
and preparation

Me now
Through fly fishing and being a
challenge course facilitator I have
learned
Patience
Confidence
Adaptability
Foresight
Quick thinking
Preparedness
Decisiveness
I have learned through my experiences
as a facilitator much
From how to get through to all
different types of groups
How to speak when needed and
know when to keep quiet when
necessary
