SCIENCE UNIT PLAN

NAME:

DARRELL DULALCHAN

CLASS:

FORM 3 INTEGRATED SCIENCE

TOPIC:

FORCES

TIME FRAME:

3 WEEKS 12 PERIODS

National Goals

Students should be able to demonstrate the

knowledge of the basic principles of
Mathematics and Science and Technology
as they impact on daily living.

Big Ideas

Formal Science Knowledge, Background and

Experiences

Aims

All matter must have some force acting

upon it
Gravity is the most common type of force
Mass is a measure of the amount of matter
in an object.
Volume is the amount of space and object
occupies.

Forces exist all around acting upon us which

allow objects to move or stay in position,
which also limit how well machines can
work.

Students will be able to define and explain

the how the properties of a force aid in their
classification.
Students will be able to distinguish between
mass and weight and explain how mass and
density are fundamental factors that
contributed to the principles as set out by
Archimedes.
Students will be able to explain how the
knowledge of forces has enabled man to
literally move mountains via the creation of
simple machines.
Students will be able to appreciate how
forces has contributed to every aspect of
their lives.

Possible Alternatives / Everyday Ideas

Forces are all around us they can be present

in a liquid or between surfaces
Density refers to mass per unit volume
Pressure is the force per unit area
Mass is the quantity of matter in an object
and weight is the force exerted on any object
by gravity.
Things float when the object is less dense
that the fluid in which it is sitting in.
Forces are required for motion(an action) to
occur.

Misconceptions

Forces are spiritual in nature

Dense means stupid
Pressure refers to be stressed out
Mass and weight are the same
Floating objects have small weights.

General Objectives

Students should be able to:

Define what is a force.

Describe the different types of forces.
Explain the relation of gravity to mass and weight.
Explain what is meant by the term density and describe its connection to Archimedes Principles
and how it affects Flotation.
Explain what momentum and why it is important to humans.
Explain how the application of the knowledge of forces has allowed man to make their lives
easier.

A lot of concepts for one semester. However it is logically sequenced, and a good range of
strategies, with a focus on your ICT study. Lessons I saw were well presented.
