The fight Against Domestic Islamic Terrorism.

Gabriel Johnson

Final paper

We all know that people are dangerous. The world is full of people that are, mean, and
selfish, recently people have been projecting these issues and concerns on one specific group of
people and they may be out of line doing so. This group of people is the Muslim community, and
most often our fears of terrorism are projected on them. We, as a species, are afraid of what we
cannot control. We feel that we have lost control, we lose security, because of our fear we make
assumptions and forget to follow the facts. To move forward we need to realize that we have
overlooked these things and get passed it and learn from our mistakes. Whether or not the
Muslim community is to blame for this violence, we need to not overlook key evidence that
supports the treatment of this community.

In this current world religion runs the world. People can use religion as an excuse to gain
power by using the idea of gods and salvation to exploit the good nature in peoples hearts.
Throughout history religion has been one of the, if not the most efficient motivators for power.
Most countries are known because of what religion they practice. Take Iraq for example, 97% of
their population is Islam, (see #10 in the bibliography for more info). They are stereotypically
thought of as violent only because of what religion they practice not because of how they are as
people. If we as a human species would forget about religion and think about how the world is as
a whole, how people are alone and together, we would most likely see a big difference in the way
we think about violence related to people. The only problem with that is that religion is real and
people follow doctrine, and we must see the groups as a community.

The Muslim community has been bombarded with insults, threats, and hatred by not just
people who were affected by terrorism, but by other people as well who dont know all the facts.
Politicians like Donald trump, Ted Cruz and other candidates running for president. Build the
fear that letting Muslims be in the United States, means that everyone around them is in danger.
If that is true then what are the 3.3 million Muslims in the U.S. doing? They are clearly not very
good at being dangerous if in the last 44 years, only 3,133 people have died due to Islamic
terrorism in the United States, 911 alone had 2,752 deaths. If we exclude that from our statistic
because it was so major here are your statistics since 1972: On American soil we have had 84
terrorist attacks of these only 22 killed more than one person, 60 of them killed only one person.
There have been a total of 381 deaths in the United States since 1972 (still excluding 911) due to
Islamic terrorism. This total accounts for less than 9 deaths from terrorism attacks in the United
States per year for the last 44 years. Whether or not politicians know that this is the truth, they
want to make you believe that these 9 deaths per year are worthy of stopping the people from an
entire religion from entering the United States. We all know that 9 deaths is far too many, but the
280,276 Muslim immigrants that rely on being in the United States should not be denied entry
because of the approximately 9 deaths that will happen that year. To make matters worse people
of power are encouraging police to patrol Muslim communities. To use there discretionary
power to not protect the innocent from the multitude of murders that happen on American soil
but to use the power they hold as law enforcement officers to encroach on the Muslim society as
a whole. See # 11 for more information and the speech Ted Cruz gives encouraging police to
patrol Muslim communities.

Although Islamic terrorism in the United States may not be as high as one may think the
terrorism outside the U.S. is steadily getting worse and worse such as according to J E S S
MCHUGH

the Madrid train bombing on march 2004, the November terrorist attacks last year

that killed 130 people, the Norway terror attacks that killed 77 people on July 22 2011, and many
more. Just 10 of the recent terrorist attacks outside the U.S. have killed 520 people and injured a
whopping 3,173 people. Now this might be a sign that says we should not let Muslims enter the
United States because it might be a matter of national security. As it stands whether or not one is
for or against Muslim immigrants entering the United States, one has to acknowledge that
Islamic terrorism is a real threat. Truly accepting that fact will help individuals make an unbiased
decision as to what government and law enforcement officers should do.

If we want to take an unbiased look at the problem facing our country we must take a
look at how their lives are affected by this problem of Islamic terrorism. Muslims are often
stereotyped and put into a very basic, non-fact-based existence. The media crucifies them by
making them seem evil or at the very least a violent people. The website
https://encounteringislam.org/misconceptions clears up in much greater detail what people think
and what actually is in the Muslim community. We assume that all terrorist attacks are carried
out by Muslims and religiously motivated individuals with the intent of making the world a
different place. But in reality I.S.I.S. recruits any able bodied person willing to do their bidding.
The vast majority of Westerners joining up with ISIS are extraordinarily ignorant when it
comes to religion, said Max Abrahms, a Northeastern University professor who studies jihadist
groups. Most recruits have no prior connection to Syria and never even thought to visit. They
want to gain power by any means necessary. We cannot keep projecting our problems on

individuals based on religion or race, because that is the reason that we have had so many
problems in this country, and in this world. Racism almost broke America in the 1800 when we
fought the civil war. We must learn from our mistakes and make better decisions.

In this country minorities have had it rough from the very beginning, they have always
been bullied and stepped over. This countrys law enforcement has been pressured by social
norms to treat minorities with hostility, as well as being pressured by people of power such as
politicians. Muslims are no exception to this they are put into a category that separates them as a
people and our government and law enforcement are showing them and other minorities like
black men, hostility. According to http://www.naacp.org/pages/criminal-justice-factsheet one in six black men had been incarcerated as of 2001. If current trends continue, one in

three black males born today can expect to spend time in prison during his lifetime. This just
goes to show how unbiased we are when it comes to other cultures even if they are from the
United States.

Terrorism is a real problem, but in the United States of America the biggest problems in
the U.S. regarding law enforcement include the high murder rate per year, the rising and already
huge crime rate, and prison population. In the United States every year there are approximately
16,238 murders, which accounts to 44 murders per day. This is a huge problem whereas the
domestic Islamic terrorism accounts 9 deaths a year on United States soil. One can focus on the
deaths brought about partially by a religion one can focus on the insanely large amount of deaths
brought by the truly evil nature in someones heart, or one can judge someone by the color of

their skin and throw them in a prison for the longest amount of time. But if one chooses to do
this, one should work with the facts and not make preconceived notions and pretend to know
what and why people do what they do. One should only focus on what can be done to make the
world a better place. Whether or not someone believes that domestic Islamic terrorism is a threat,
law enforcement should always work with the facts.

United States officials are aware of the threat of Islamic terrorism and are taking steps to
prevent attacks. Anne Witkowsky, the U.S. deputy coordinator for homeland security and
multilateral affairs at The U.S. Department of State says Let me underscore: No single country
can address the threat of terrorism alone. Nor can this threat be resolved through military power
alone; rather it requires a comprehensive approach including continual exchange of ideas and
engagement with the international community. this is an example of why our country is
reaching out to form new alliances to build new bonds between countries, to keep the innocent
people of the world safe from this growing threat. It tells us that we need to band together to
fight a threat of this nature, and magnitude.

The United States law enforcement agencies have their work cut out for them in the
upcoming years. Between the terrorism outside of our country and because of the idea terrorism
inside our country. Whether or not one supports the banning of Muslim immigrants, whether or
not our officials want to wage war on domestic Islamic terrorism, whether or not we chose to
focus on our racial discrimination in the law enforcement community. We must recognize,
understand, and acknowledge all of the problems this may present. We must recognize the

magnitude and severity of the situation and understand that one cannot jump to conclusions
based on the preconceived notions. We must not be pressured to make an unjust decision based
on the ideals and biased inputs from closed minded peaceful individuals.
