Augmented Reality

Augmented reality is the integration of digital information with the

user's environment in real time. Unlike virtual reality, which creates a totally
artificial environment, augmented reality uses the existing environment and
overlays new information on top of it.
According to the definition made by the Wikipedia: augmented reality
(AR) is a live direct or indirect view of a physical, real-world environment
whose elements are augmented (or supplemented) by computer-generated
sensory input such as sound, video, graphics or GPS data (Wikipedia, 2015).
And the way how augmented reality works is to superimpose graphics,
audio and other sensory enhancements over a real-world environment in real
time (Bonsor, n.d.).
The word augmented reality was coined by Thomas P. Caudell,
former Senior Principal Scientist in Research and Technology at the Boeing
Company and now the professor of Department of Electrical and Computer
Engineering at University of new Mexico, in 1992 when he was in Boeing
(Clemens, Raphael, & Lukas, 2015). The word was originally in reference to
a head-mounted display Boeing used to guide workers as they put together
electrical wiring harnesses for aircraft equipment (Rouse, 2015).

Training for professional (military, law enforcement, medical,

industrial) purpose
Augmented reality and immersive training environment are commonly
used for military training purposes by all services such as flight and vehicle
simulators. These technologies are also used for training soldiers and law
enforcement officers regarding how to engage potential armed targets or
suspects, training firefighters how to effectively and safely put out a fire in
different scenarios, as well as for medical surgery training purpose so
paramedics and doctors can practice their life-saving skills and specific
procedure of complex operation in virtual reality before they use it on real
patients.

Entertainment:
Augmented reality is already widely used in racing, and various ball
games in order to provide audience more game and score related
information in real time.

Translation:
Apple store also offers some very useful application software to help
language learners translate the words and phrases on signs into different
languages in real time using their smartphones camera and internet
connection.
Education:
Language: Phonetics, Scanner & Translator - convert photo to text and
make translation to more than 90 languages
Design: Fashion clothes design, Interior design, space arrangement
Science:
Demonstration of animal body structure, organs, planets of solar
system, cycle of the moon and lunar eclipse.
When focus on the picture of an insect, it will illustrate the three body
parts of an insect (i.e., abdomen, thorax, and head) and the main
feature of insects that they have six legs.
When focus on a picture of butterflies, then it will demonstrate the
information and pictures of metamorphosis and molting on screen.

Limitations: (Bonsor, n.d.)

Computation speed and Information accuracy:
Technical limitation (e.g., screen is too small; wearable devices with AR
technology is not matured yet)
Too much information provided overwhelm the users
Privacy concerns:

Application examples:

The development of augmented reality and other emerging

technologies such as head-mounted devices(HMDs), wearable devices,
virtual worlds and immersive environments, and learning analytics
will merge together and thus bring together a more intuitive learning and
instructional environment and easier access to information and contents for
the learners and instructors of this generation and beyond.
