Slide 1: Hello high school students. Today I will be talking to you about the type of writing and
research done in the professional field of teaching.
Slide 2: Im sure you are aware of the common misconceptions behind teaching. Most of the
time, people think that all you do as a teacher every day is stand in front of students and lecture
about some boring topic and just go on and on forever. Well, let me tell you how wrong this is.
Teaching involves a lot of research and writing that you are expected to do on a daily basis.
Slide 3: Now, do not freak out! The research and writing isnt always going to be formal.
Slide 4: In order to help you understand what the researcher and writing is for I took delivery of
speaking with an elementary school teacher who talked to me about what shes expected to do in
her particular school and grade level that she teaches in. Mrs. Aceves works at Cien Aguas
International School, which is a charter school here in Albuquerque.
Slide 5: Also, to further help you understand the different types of writing and research done I
will be showing you two journals; 1) Teachers Capacities to Meet Students Additional Support
Needs in Mainstream Primary Education and 2) The Day-to-Day Work of Primary School
Teachers: A Source Of Professional Learning. We will look at the layout, organization, and
language that are being used in these journals. Keep in mind that the writing and research done in
this field all have a specific job to help you better yourself and to learn and adapt to different
ways of teaching.

Slide 6: Here are the two academic journals. I will be referring to Teachers Capacities to Meet
Students Additional Support Needs in Mainstream Primary Education as the first journal and
The Day-to-Day Work of Primary School Teachers: A Source of Professional Learning as the
second journal. When you compare these two the very first thing you notice is the layout of the
academic journals.
Slide 7: The first journal has multiple paragraphs. The main points are titled. Then they have
subtitles that go hand in hand with the primary title. These all pertain to a specific part of the
study. The length of the paragraphs varies from paragraph to paragraph but for the most part they
are all equal in length. This academic journal also has two tables that are a visual representation
of the study done.
Slide 8: The second academic journal has longer paragraphs. They have multiple titles that all
help you go from one paragraph to another. To present their examples they simply quote what the
teachers in their study said. The paragraphs containing the quotes look a lot smaller than the
paragraphs that explain what is going on.
Slide 9: These layouts are common based on the studies that were done. Mrs. Aceves stated that
most of the research done is informal in some way and when you report it back you just have to
explain in detail what you found in your study. She also explained how most of the research that
she does is visual so she watches how her students grow and get better and what works for them.
Its clear that both the academic journals show similar layouts. They dont do columns and they
focus on the paragraphs the most. The only difference is that the first journal shows the results in
the tables. The second journal, although they dont have tables to show the results, they still
show what the result of their study by quoting the teachers they spoke to. These layouts work

well with the type of research done which both were aimed at letting teachers see how they could
better themselves.
Slide 10: Now lets look at the organization. This is probably the most important because you
need to be able to follow the ideas behind the research conducted.
Slide 11: The organization of the first article consists of 5 main sections that are intro., methods,
measures, results, discussion, and conclusion. They try to map out in chronological order how
they did the research. When it was time to present the information they organized the tables with
different rows and columns. Then they included explanations of these tables.
Slide 12: The organization in the second journal has the different sections organizing the ideas
along the way of the study. Then they supplemented the ideas with the quotes of the teachers
they studied. The way they organized the writing was based on the way they asked the questions
which made sense because then they added the quotes of the teachers.
Slide 13: When I spoke with Mrs. Aceves, I asked her about how she organized her paper. She
answered, When I do research I mostly just watch how they are learning and how they are
reacting to the work theyre doing in class. I carry around sticky notes where I write down the
things that I see as I observe the children. Its not a formal way to do research but I can organize
my thoughts better later when I look at the comments I made at the time.
Slide 14: We can see that the organization in both the journals follow about the same thought
process. This works for both the studies because they were able to help the audience follow the
way the research was actually conducted. The writing methods used are important because you
want to be able to keep the authors engaged in your way of thinking behind the research.
Keeping everything nice and organized also helps with the audience being able to find

information easier. Keeping your thoughts organized when conducting research and writing it
down is important because you want to be able to go back learn about what works and what
doesnt.
Slide 15: The last thing we will look at is the language that was used in these journals. This is
what will give us clues about who your audience is and how formal or informal your research
was.
Slide 16: The first journal shows formal language. The language is still easy to understand and
read through. They use jargon that is usually used in statistics which included symbols like the
alpha symbol. This part might have been confusing if you didnt have minimal amount of
knowledge in the statistics field.
Slide 17: The second journal shows us more informal language. They use everyday language.
The author speaks in first person and then presents what the teachers who participated in the
survey in first person also. The teachers that were quoted also used easy to understand language
Slide 18: When I asked Mrs. Aceves what she thought about the importance of language use in
her writing she stated that it will all depend on who you are talking too. When she speaks to her
elementary school students she tries to use language that doesnt challenge them too much unless
its a vocabulary word that they will be focusing on. When she speaks with other teachers they
use specialized jargon that belongs to the teaching world. You will always need to communicate
with your audience. This time, we see two different ways to approach writing styles. We have
formal language and more informal language in the writing. Seeing that they are academic
journals you would think that they would both be formal but like Mrs. Aceves said it all depends

on who you are talking to and obviously who you want to reach. Being able to adapt to the
different needs that might come up when doing your own research and writing.
Slide 19: Okay so now you have seen what some research and writing will be like in the teaching
field. But you also have to keep in mind that what you are required to do can also depend on the
school and level of teaching you plan to do. The articles I showed you both did research on
things that were important to the teachers conducting the study because they want to better
themselves and compare what different aspects affect the abilities of a teacher. Finding ways to
better yourself is always important because there is always room for improvement.
Slide 20: I hope this information has been useful to you and you take in into consideration as you
prepare to come to UNM or whatever school you plan on going to next fall!
