** Most of my assessments assess all of the learning objectives because there will
be different instances of the assessment over the course of the unit that will all
together, assess all of the learning outcomes, but individually, will only assess one
or two at a time.

Brief Description (be as detailed as

possible)
Describe how this is for/as/of.
What it is:
This is a formative assessment technique, I
will have them use this to frame their thinking
in regards to critical listening.
How I will use it:
I would have the students do a reaction to
how they feel about a piece, this forces them
to put value on at least 2 aspects of a piece
and think critically about how they feel about
the music.
This will be formative assessment because I
will be collecting this to assess where their
thinking is taking them in regards to critical
listening to rock & roll music.
This will also be assessment as learning
because this will be used as a vehicle for the
students to understand what it means to
critically listen.
What it is:
The students will complete a sheet that I will
have them do either at the beginning of the
day or the end of the day. On this sheet there
will be one guiding question, either based on
knowledge that we covered last class, or that
we covered this class. I will expect them to
write 2-3 sentences before they may leave or
before class begins.
How I will use it:
I will use this to assess how the students are
appreciating the material, what their
questions are, and what their interests are, so
that I may best teach them the material. I will
also use this to refresh their brains of what we
learned today or the class before.
This will be formative because this will be for
me to assess what they have retained or what
stuck in order to guide my teaching and
gauge their interests.

History of Rock & Roll

What it is: This will be a journal, blog, or video

blog that the students will make/write, with
some time given in class. These will be done
in every other class. If they do not finish it in
class, it will be due for the beginning of the
next class. These journals will respond to a
guided question that I will provide them with.
Each guided question will ask them what they
think about a piece in regards to one of the
SLOs. Ex: Explain the style of Mr. Tambourine
man (what division of rock would it fall under)
and why? Historically, how did the artist get to
that point? Explain the historical path that
rock and roll took up to this point. (This will hit
Popular Music 5)
The first 5 journals will be one page double
spaced minimum or a 2 minute long video, the
last journal will be two pages double spaced
minimum or a 4 minute long video and will be
marked against a rubric/checklist built with
the students on what is important to them
about these journals.
How I will use it:
The students will have 6 journals due in total.
Of these 6, the first five will be taken for
completion marks only. In this aspect, they will
be formative and I will be giving them
feedback as to how they did with the question
based on the rubric and what I am looking for.
I will respond to their depth and encourage
them to test different points of view. Included
in the class time, when I give them back their
journals I will just get them to read over the
feedback and write on their journal one thing
that they will do differently next time based on
that feedback.
The 6th and final journal will be summative in
nature, the question will encompass multiple
SLOs and will require very in depth
exploration. This will be marked against the
same rubric that the formative journals.
This is also assessment as learning as it gives
the students a chance to explore music and
how they feel about it through writing or

speaking. I am allowing them to do the journal

in a variety of modes because even if they do
it in video format, they needed to do the
preparation work, and that is what I am
looking for.
What it is: I will observe the students as they
work on pieces as well as conference one-onone with them during work time. I will make
anecdotal notes to track how they are doing
and to ensure that I am assessing all students
evenly.
How I will use it:
I will use this formatively to assess how the
students are grasping the depth of the
material and how they are applying it to their
playing.
This will also provide formative assessment for
the demonstration videos to come.
What it is:
I will have the students over the course of
each week be working on a specific piece of
music, within a specific style of rock that we
are covering that week. The students will need
to pick a 30 second 1 minute clip of the
piece that demonstrates guitar playing
characteristic to that style. Over the course of
the week, they will practice, understand, and
appreciate this clip. They will by the end of the
week need to either come in and demonstrate
for me or record themselves demonstrating
and send it to me, along with a verbal
explanation of what artistic decisions they
made in their playing that imitate those of the
style. They will also need to explain the
historical and political context of the piece.
They must have this to me, at the latest, by
the Saturday night of that week. There will be
3 demonstrations total required.
How I will use it:
This will be the main summative assessment
for this unit as it requires them to have a
historical and political understanding and
appreciation, and by doing three, one each
week, they will naturally cover the spectrum

of rock music and show their investment in

the material. This will be marked on a rubric
that I will develop in partnership with the
students on the first day.
What it is:
I will have the students complete a small
questionnaire that will serve two purposes for
me. I will have questions on there that will ask
questions about how they are comfortable
with the material. This will be done by a KWL
chart at the bottom of the questionnaire. This
will ask them what they Know, what they
Wonder, and how they want to Learn about
the History of Rock and Roll. This will inform
how I teach and also what they already know.
On the top of the questionnaire I will ask them
questions about themselves, some general
interest inventory questions, but also, quite a
few in regards to music specifically and guitar.
How I will use this:
I will use this formatively to give me an idea of
how I can most effectively teach these
students and of what they already know and
are aware of. This will also provide me with a
comfortable glance at what they are
interested in, how they best learn and how I
can best guide my teaching.
