spreadsheet template and use that spreadsheet to create a presentation comparing their
hometown city to cities around the world.
Grade or Age Level of Student(s): 9 12th grade

Students will learn how to use spreadsheets and databases to gather information in
which to compare.
Students will learn how to research information on the internet and in books.
Students will learn about the places and environments of cities around the world.
Standards Addressed: Social Studies, World Geography
Timeline: Assuming students meet 1 to 1 hours every day, the students will have 5
classes to collect all the information and 2 days to prepare their presentations.
Presentations will last 2 days.
Materials: Each student will need access to computers with Microsoft Excel, Word and
PowerPoint on it. They might need access to a printer and a memory stick to take their
work home.
Grouping Strategies: Since students will need their individual time on the computer,
students will have to share the computers in the classroom. They will have approximately
30 - 45 minutes to look up information every day. While the students are waiting they will
use their assigned computer time, students will have time to work other classwork.
Students are also allowed to work on this information at home or from the library
computers or in their computer lab.
Learning Activities: Each student will receive a spreadsheet template with information on
their hometown already recorded in it. The students will pick 3 other cities, already
grouped together, to look up the same information on the internet or in books from the
library and record in their spreadsheet. They will then use the spreadsheet to build charts
and graphs (5 total) comparing the information theyve gathered to their hometown. They
will then build a presentation, using graphs, charts, pictures or anything else, in
PowerPoint which they will share with the class at the end of the assignment.

Assessment: Assessment for this assignment will be based on the information collected
and the project presentation. Rubric will be attached.
