Monday, Feb. 15th BRNG B274 (Lab)


SWBAT: Recall Swales and Gees concepts. Watch a theory in action via Bronies
documentary.
1. Go over Swales theory again by applying this to a religion: Christianity/White Horse
Christian Center. Make sure to show different participatory mechanisms, i.e. website (10
minutes).
2. Switch to discussing a different discourse community according to Swales, Bronies. Play
select clips that show lexis, goals, genres, etc. (10-12 minutes).
3. Have students complete in-class writing #5 on how Bronies constitute a discourse
community according to Swales (5-7 minutes).
4. Go over student answers (5 minutes).
5. Finish the discussion by recapping Gee (5-10 minutes)
6. Collect final drafts of literacy narrative.
Tuesday, Feb. 16th HEAV 106 (Classroom)
SWBAT: Discuss and identify instances of ethnography in My Freshman Year chapter 1 & 4.
Identify the discourse community being examined in these chapters and recognize effective
questions to ask their interviewee.
1. Students were asked to read the chapters and think about questions pertaining to each
chapter beforehand. Some questions include:

Wednesday/ Friday Feb. 17th & 19th HEAV 225 (Conferences)
SWBAT: Indicate their chosen community, the theorist they are using, and whom they are
interviewing.
1. Students were asked to come in with answers for the questions mentioned above. Each
student will share, and I will either approve or disapprove of his or her community. For

example, sororities and fraternities cannot be used for this assignment due to inability for
full disclosure. If time is left over, ask students why they chose this particular community.
Thursday, Feb. 18th HEAV 106 (Classroom)
SWBAT: Continue the discussion on primary research. Identify interview structure and practice
in-text citations.
1. Discuss the NFG readings pertaining to research and citing. (20-25 minutes).
2. Discuss in-text citations and show examples of previous discourse community essays, so
students can see how quotes are properly embedded (20 minutes).
