I. MAIN IDEAS & PURPOSE OF THE STORY


1. Main Ideas of each chapter:
- Chapter 1: Sixteen year-old Hazel Grace Lancaster, diagnosed with Stage 4 thyroid
cancer with metastasis in her lungs, is forced by her parents to attend a support group for
children living with cancer.
- Chapter2: The first time Hazel Grace met her love, Agustus Water at the support group
session as Isaacs requests.
- Chapter3: Hazel went to Guss house to watch movie. Then, they switch their favorite
book to eachother.
- Chapter4: the book becomes a point of bonding for them, and Hazel and Augustus begin
to spend more time together.
2. Communicative purpose:
That we have a bad habit of imagining the very sick or the dying as being kind of
fundamentally other. The story was bout to argue for their humanity, their (sick people)
complete humanity.
3. Reiteration:
Hazel went to cancer support group to make friends and get a life, like what her mother
asked her.

II. SUPPORTING DETAILS


1.) Main Character :
1. Hazel Grace Lancester

The book is written from her perspective. She does not have siblings and she is the
daughter to Mr. Lancaster and Mrs. Lancaster, friend of Isaac and girlfriend of Augustus
Waters.
In the beginning of the book she doesnt talk to anyone and looks unsociable, she just
tries to avoid the people, but in the end she realizes it's good for her to make friends and
have a life while she can. In the book, Hazel described as having dark short hair, green
eyes and she said she has chipmunk cheeks' from steroidal treatment. She suffers from

stage four thyroid cancer that had spread to her lungs. For this reason, Hazel must carry
an oxygen tank and nasal cannulas wherever she goes.
2. Augustus Waters

Augustus Waters is a tall, handsome and charming boy in remission for Osteosarcoma.
He lost one of his leg because of Osreosarcoma. He met Hazel (protagonist) through
"Support group." Augustus falls in love with Hazel, and as the novel demonstrated, he
would do anything for her girlfriend, Hazel. He teaches Hazel many things about life,
love, and tragedy. Augustus is also a main character and is an extremely important part to
the plot of The Fault in Our Stars.

2.) Supporting Character


1. Isaac
Issac is the one who brought Augustus to support group at the beginning of the book. He
is also a teenager, and has eye cancer, and having rather large, thick glasses. Then he had
to get his eyes cut out, so he became blind. He had a girlfriend that he adored and he
loved her so much, but she broke up with him before he got his eyes cut out, because it
would be too hard for her to break up with a blind guy. And Isaac became desperately
angry with her. Isaac is known to like video games and has a wide sense of humor.
2. Hazel's mom (Mrs. Lancester)
Hazel's mom is really protective, and is always there for Hazel. Near the beginning, she is
shown worried about Hazel's presumed depression. For this reason she enrolls Hazel in
a Support Group. She doesn't go to work or have a job, she stays home to look after
Hazel. She also chaperones the trip to Amsterdam with Hazel and Augustus . She is
working to get her masters in social work.
3. Hazel's dad (Mr. Lancester)
Hazels dad is really nice, he is working too often, so its so rare to accompany his only
child to hospital. But he wishes he could, he cries alot, mostly because Hazel. He is really
love Hazel

4. Lidewij Vilgenthart
Lidewij is Peter Van Houten's assistant. When Peter is being terribly awfully mean to
Hazel and Augustus, she quits her job. she has a ton of benevolence and is super nice.
She lives in Amsterdam.
5. Peter Van Houten
Peter Van Houten is The author of Hazel's favorite book, An Imperial Affliction. He
wrote it about the daugter he had who had cancer, she died when she was eight. He is an
alcoholic and he acts so rude. When Hazel and Augustus come he doesnt pay attention
to them. But when Augusutuss funeral, he is attending his funeral and ask an apologize
to Hazel in his own way.
6. Kaitlyn
Kaitlyn is one of Hazel's only friends that she used to go to school with. They still talk
sometimes, but they rarely ever hang out.
7. Mr. Waters
He is the father of Augustus and the husband of Mrs. Waters. He doesnt appear too often.
He is nice to new people
8. Mrs. Waters
She is the mother of Augustus, and the wife of Mr. Waters. She doesnt appear too often.
But in the book, is clearly demonstrated if she loves his son so much.

5.) Four Problems

Hazel doesnt like being in a cancer support group because it makes her felt more

depressed
Hazel and Augustus wanted to meet Peter Van Houten, the author of An Imperial

Affliction and asks him the continuation of his unsolved book


Hazels parents didnt let her to go to Amsterdam due to her severe condition
Augustus cancer has returned and his health are getting lower and lower each day

6.) Resolution of the problems above


a. Augustus joins the cancer supporting group and met Hazel, he makes Hazel believe there
is more than thinking about dying.
b. Augustus uses his wish (theres an organisation who grant dying children wishes) to go
to Amsterdam with Hazel to visit Peter Van Houten, the author of An Imperial Affliction
and ask him the continuation of the book he wrote
c. After a consultation and negotiation with Hazels parents and doctor, finally Hazel can go
to Amsterdam with Augustus with one requirement that Hazels mom went with them too
d. d.Augustus is dead and leaves Hazel in deep grief, but before he died he wrote a letter
that says how much he loves her and that was enough for her.
