Lesson Content
SC.3.L.15.1 :Classify animals into major groups (mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians,
fish, arthropods, vertebrates and invertebrates, those having live births and those which
lay eggs) according to their physical characteristics and behaviors.
LAFS.3.W.3.8: Recall information from experiences or gather information from print and
digital sources; take brief notes on sources and sort evidence into provided categories.

ObjectivesThe objective of this lesson is that the students will take effective notes during the Brain
Pop! video and will have a strong sense of what vertebrate animals are.

-Create groups
Introduction:
Being by asking them all what they know about different types of
animals. After a few hands then we will discuss how on our field
trip, to the Lowry Park Zoo, we are going to want to keep our eyes
open for all types of different animals.
Start:
Then have the students partner up with their shoulder buddy and
group the provided animal tiles in groups, however they want. After
they are done I will call on a few groups to explain how or why they
were grouped in that particular way.
Afterwards they will move to the carpet and watch the Brain Pop
video. Before moving from their seats, the paper passers will help
me and pass out the worksheets to help them take notes.
It is important to give them a purpose for watching the video so I
will tell them to look out for similarities and differences with the way
they grouped their own cards.
Watch video and take notes
Then move back to their seats in order to reevaluate the way they
grouped the animal titles or cards. I will then give them the
opportunity to change their cards if the video taught the something
new.
Discussion Questions
Do you think that these different types of animals will be classified
at the zoo like they are in science? Why or why not?

Review what we learned about vertebrate animals and discuss what

we should look out for the next day, at the zoo.

Meeting your students

needs as people and as
learners

This lesson accommodates all types of learning because we will be watching a video,
listening to a discussion, and physically manipulating the character tiles.

Differentiationbased on
the needs of your students
how will you take
individual and group
learning differences into
account.

I will predetermine which students should not sit together based off of their academic
level and/or behavioral level. I have seen that there are many students who will follow
suit of other students, in both negative and positive ways. In the negative situations this
causes already struggling students to struggle even more. However, if I put a lower level
student with an on level student they often work well together in order to have a
stronger, more focused, outcome.

Relevant Psychological
Theories and research
taken in consideration
when planning this lesson

Even though some students may have previous knowledge about vertebrate animals
there is a lot of information that many students are unaware of. This creates a Zone of
Proximal Development (ZPD) or a difference between where they are at developmentally
and where their level of development has the potential to be with the guidance of a
teacher, myself. After they watch the Brain Pop! Video and we have a discussion then
their knowledge level will have improved from very little or unorganized knowledge to
structured knowledge.

Reflection Of Lesson
When I began preparing for this lesson my collaborating teacher stressed that many of the students already had very vague idea of
how animals are classified. I then realized that it would be important to work off of their previous knowledge and further organize any
new knowledge. The lesson started with a little bit of crazy energy because it was the end of the day and the kids knew that their field trip,
to the zoo, was the following day. After I got them back on task I handed out the animal tiles and this allowed me to see who had what
knowledge.
This was extremely helpful because it gave me an idea of who needed more attention from me and more feedback on how they had
grouped their information. Overall I believe that this lesson went rather well. There were parts of the lesson that had snags but I think that
that had a lot to do with a lack of my practice with classroom management not the psychological theory that had applied to my lesson. I
believe that my psychological theory was successful because my students were able to correctly identify the classifications and groupings
of vertebrate animals.
