II. Before you start

Identify prerequisite
knowledge and skills.

General understanding of the game of badminton.

Pre-assessment (for learning): Before talking about the drop shots, ask students what they know and get a
understanding of their knowledge.

Outline assessment
activities
(applicable to this lesson)

Formative (for learning): Students will break into groups and go over drop shots with each other.
Formative (as learning): During the end discussion as students to think again when they might use the drop shot
during competition.
Summative (of learning):

What barriers might this

lesson present?
What will it take
neurodevelopmentally,
experientially,
emotionally, etc., for your
students to do this lesson?

Provide Multiple Means of

Representation
Provide options for perceptionmaking information perceptible
I will present what a drop shot is so
they can see it visually, and explain
the drop shot so they can think
about it.

Provide Multiple Means of Action

and Expression
Provide options for physical actionincrease options for interaction
We will be practicing for much of
the period.

Provide Multiple Means of

Engagement
Provide options for recruiting
interest- choice, relevance, value,
authenticity, minimize threats

Provide options for language,

mathematical expressions, and
symbols- clarify & connect
language

Provide options for expression and

communication- increase medium
of expression

Provide options for sustaining effort

and persistence- optimize challenge,
collaboration, mastery-oriented
feedback

I will use language that is

perceptible and easy to
understand so they can apply it
and understand what I am
talking about.

9-15-14

They will be in practice stations

which will allow for multiple
means of feedback.

Provide options for comprehensionactivate, apply & highlight

Provide options for executive

functions- coordinate short & long
term goals, monitor progress, and
modify strategies

Provide options for self-regulationexpectations, personal skills and

strategies, self-assessment &
reflection

We will have cues, so they

understand when to use a drop
shot and if it was the correct
choice for the situation.
Materials-what materials
(books, handouts, etc) do
you need for this lesson
and are they ready to
use?

How will your classroom

be set up for this lesson?

Nets, 30 racquets, 30 birdies, check sheets and pencils, 10 cones, 10 poly spots

We will be set up in the gym with as many badminton courts as we can have.

the lesson)

and perform a mini drill.

Students will divide into their groups and find a

(B) hits a forehand drop shot over the net. Player
(C, D) retrieve those birdies. Rotate after 5 tries.

Backhand drop shot-

break into their groups and perform a
mini drill.

Practice stationsTeacher will walk around to each station and

demonstrate what the task to be accomplished is.
Once this is done the class will break into their
groups and go to a station. The stations are short
serves, long serves, drop shots, and smashes. Each
station will go for 3 minutes, with 30 seconds of
rotate time.

Closure

culmination,
wrap-up)

Teacher will gather up students and ask them

questions about what they learned today and if they
can recall the different aspects of what they
learned. After the questions have been discussed
they dismiss students.

Students will follow the teacher and listen to where

the different practice groups are located. After that
they will participate in the practice groups to work
on their skill.

Students will participate in the discussion and recap

what they learned about drop shots.

Your reflection about the lesson, including evidence(s) of student learning and engagement, as well as ideas for improvement
for next time. (Write this after teaching the lesson, if you had a chance to teach it. If you did not teach this lesson, focus on the
process of preparing the lesson.)
I prepared this lesson with the intent of giving another option of shots a student can use during competition. The drop shot is
very important to the game of badminton, so I worked it in before the competition day.
