Grade Level: 10
Subject: High School Algebra 2
Equations

Topic: System of

Objective: The students will be able to be able to solve for multiple variables using
system of equations.
Standard: NJCCCS for mathematics CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSA.REI.C.5. Prove that,
given a system of two equations in two variables, replacing one equation by the sum of
that equation and a multiple of the other produces a system with the same solutions.
Material: Pencil, notebook, textbook, whiteboard, mini whiteboards, markers.
Prerequisite Skills and Knowledge: The students will have already completed the
units on order of operations as well as solving linear equations.
Anticipatory Set: Warmup of problems that break the topic into its most fundamental
step.
4 + 4x = 8. Solve for x. 5(1) + 2y = 13. Solve for y.
Input and Modeling: Explain how warmup relates to System of Equations. When we
solve the first equation we get x = 1, which is given to up in the second equation. We can
then plug our newly found x into the second equation to solve for y which is 4, which is in
the first equation. After this the teacher will do additional problems on the board.
Student Practice and Checking for Understanding: Split students into groups of two
that will work on practice problems together.
Differentiation: Split students into two teams. Each team will have a student face off
versus a student from the other team in a race to solve a problem. Winning team gets
two bonus points on exam. Give each student a small white board and some markers. I
will write a problem on the board and each student will solve the problem on their mini
whiteboard and raise their board in the air when they finish the problem. Student
practice; students working with a peer to solve problems.
Closure: Ticket out: all students will do one final problem. Students will not be allowed to
leave class until showing the teacher that they can perform system of equations.
