Rationale Statement

Statement of Standard Six: Assessment

The teacher understands and uses multiple methods of assessment to engage learners
in their own growth, to monitor learner progress, and to guide the teachers and learners
decision making (NJPTSB, 2014, pg 8).
Name of Artifact: Lesson Assessment
Date of Artifact: Spring 2016
Course: Education Field Experience EDUC 230-01

Rationale Statement:
For this artifact I made a quiz on the Precalculus unit of finding zeros of a
polynomial function. The purpose of this quiz is to analyze how well my students can find
zeros of rational functions to figure out if we need to spend more time on this unit or if it
is okay to move to the next unit. This directly relates to the Performances Standard 6.2
which states, The teacher designs assessments that match learning objectives with
assessment methods and minimizes sources of bias that can distort assessment results
(8). My quiz does just this, and there is no bias among the difficulty of this quiz between
students.
What I learned about being a teacher while completing this artifact is that putting
together assignments to assess students abilities can be a challenge. Just this brief quiz
took me some time and effort to make. Making fair, unbiased tests and quizzes with
quality questions will be somewhat of a challenge in the future.

This artifact will easily be used in my future classroom. As long as I am teaching

Precalculus I could probably get away with using this exact quiz that I made. But this
quiz will also be used as a guide to the other tests and quizzes I make in my future
classroom to assess my future students.
