English Language Learners

English Language Learners

Teaching Vowels to English Learners
Certain English vowels do not exist in other languages
Some letters have different sounds in English
Strategies for Teaching and Assessing English
Students may need to be assessed in their L1
It can be beneficial to see what they know in their L1 first
Drawings and images make it much easier for ELLs to pick up words
Words may need to be introduced in smaller groups so students dont get overwhelmed
Pairing students with English speakers can be beneficial
Model correct pronunciation, but dont be overly concerned with difficulties in
pronunciation
The Influence of Dialects
Students come from different backgrounds and locations which can allow for slight
pronunciation differences.
These differences should not be treated as mistakes but as variations.

Play - Word Sort

This game focuses on long vowel spelling patterns
through sorting. Each time students play this game they
are given a different long vowel spelling.
One syllable words slide across the screen and the
student pulls the word down to the correct category. If
they get it right, an image of the word is added to the
animated screen. This game is great for a quick practice
and covers many common words.
Each word includes audio pronunciation and highlights
for the vowels

Play - Long Vowel Matching

This game focuses on long vowel spelling patterns
through matching. The screen is full of cards for students
to click on, two at a time, in order to make a match. The
cards are words and pictures that match.
When students make a match they are able to see the
word/picture combination at the bottom of the screen.
Once they complete the matches they earn a star and
move onto the next level with more complex words such
as cVE words. There are 3 levels total.
The only thing that would enhance this game is audio to
match the words so students could hear the long vowels.

Read - Soap Boat story

This interactive story focuses on common words that use
long vowel spellings. Each page includes animated
illustrations that move, optional audio, and highlighted
long vowels.
This story is simple enough for students to navigate with
cues on when to change the page and how to exit the
story.
The only concern with using this story is that it is the only
story offered for long vowels on Starfall at this level.
Students can repeat it until mastered but there is not
much variety.
