Why Global Citizenship Matters

Last week I discussed the concept of global citizenship and what it means to belong to the world. I shared that
global citizenship is the vehicle of internationalization and international education, and these are the tools to
encourage students to consider their responsibilities to their communities, institutions, and society. This week, I
would like to build on this concept by addressing the question of Why Global Citizenship Matters.
I believe we can agree that the concept of Global Citizenship covers a lot of ground. Thus, it is useful to
consider the term global citizenship as shorthand for the habits of mind and complex learning associated with
global education. Why does this matter?
First, a focus on global citizenship puts the spotlight on why internationalization is central to a quality education
and emphasizes that internationalization is a means, not an end. Serious consideration of the goals of
internationalization makes student learning the key concern rather than counting inputs. Is this not why we want
each of our children to have an international education like what is provided at BIFS?
Second, there are significant benefits in encouraging students to consider their responsibilities to their
communities and to the world redound to them, institutions, and society. Strengthening our commitment to
serving society enriches our school and affirms its relevance and contributions to society, and ultimately benefits
communities and the lives of their members around the world.
Third, the concept of global citizenship creates conceptual and practical connections rather than cleavages. The
commonalities between what happens at home and "over there" become visible. What is most important is what
we share in common, not our differences. The characteristics that human beings share are balanced against the
differences that are so conspicuous. On a practical level, global citizenship provides a concept that can create
bridges to inspire cultural empathy and intercultural competence.
I am thankful that BIFS is so deeply committed to developing global citizens as our students will have the
capacity and the competence to change the world! Go BIFS! Go Bears!

NWEA MAP Testing for Grades 2 - 10

During April and May, children in grades 2 - 9 will take tests called Measures of Academic Progress (MAP).
We give MAP tests as a measure of individual student instructional levels, to measure individual academic
growth from year-to-year, and as a reflective tool on our programs in the areas of mathematics, reading, and
language usage.
MAP tests are unique in that they are computerized and adapt to be appropriate for each childs level of
learning. When taking a MAP test, the difficulty of each question is based on how well a student answers all of
the previous questions. As the student answers correctly, questions become more difficult. If the student answers
incorrectly, the questions become easier. In an optimal test, a student answers approximately half the items
correctly and half incorrectly. The final score is an estimate of the students achievement level. As a result, each
student has the same opportunity to succeed and maintain a positive attitude toward testing.
Over the next few days, your child will spend a total of about three hours completing these tests. Following the
testing period, you will receive a report showing your childs growth. For more information on resources for
parents, we encourage you to download the Parent Toolkit here. The toolkit includes information on how the
MAP is run and scored, as well as tips for parents to support their child at home.
MAP Schedule
Grade 2: Apr 26, 28, 29
Grade 4: Apr 25, 27, May 2
Grade 6-10: May 9, 10, 12

Grade 3: May 2, 4, 6

Meeting the Norwegian Prime Minister!

Johanne, Nina and Jeni from Grade 12 were fortunate to get the
opportunity to meet with the Norwegian Prime Minister last
Saturday. The Norwegian red-pants Johanne and Nina wore as a
part of their Norwegian "russ" graduation tradition caught the
attention of Ms. Solberg's secretary, who then managed to get the
girls in to Park Hyatt Hotel to meet the Prime Minister.

one foreign and one South Korean parent might send their children to international schools within South Korea

information disclosed in the survey will be used only for the purpose of the research, and the findings will be

The Grade 5 PYP Exhibition Is Here! April 26

The grade 5 students worked like little ants this week to be ready for presenting their Primary Years Program
Exhibition. They wrote, typed, printed, cut, organized and glued their findings, action and evidence on their
boards to complete their booths. In between all this busyness they also took action based on what they learned,
creating flyers, posters, speeches or meeting with important role-players.
We would like to invite all community members to our Exhibition Presentation on Tuesday 26 April at 5:00pm in
the Elementary Assembly Hall. Come celebrate our students learning with us!
The Exhibition booths will also be on display from the 22nd to the 28th of April, so please feel free to drop by
anytime to learn about our students inquiries into real-life issues, their findings and how they are trying to make
a difference.
Below are some informational flyers created by the students for the BIFS community, we hope they challenge

ELC Parent Coffee Play-Based Learning

Thank you to all the parents who participated in our information session about play-based learning in
Kindergarten and ELC. Some of the key points during the session were:
Learning happens in a social context.
Play is one of the most important ways children inquire about the world around them.
Research supports that play is a vital force for physical, social and emotional development.
The way we structure the environment supports the quality of interactions and relationships we have with
children.
IBs Approaches to Learning supports play-based learning.
