FOCUSED PROFICIENCY OBSERVATION #3 EQUITY

INTERN: BRIDGET BOURKE
OBSERVER: GNEVANS
DATE OF THE OBSERVATION: THURSDAY 7 APRIL, 2016
SUBJECT/GRADE LEVEL/CLASS PERIOD: BIOLOGY 10TH GRADE PERIOD 5

RECORD OF THE OBSERVATION BELOW

How did the Intern allow students choice in their activities and how were these choices related to
different learning styles?
Allows student groups to arrange the items in the classification activity based on their own criteria
(anything that makes sense to them). Some arrange by appearance, physical characteristics
(elasticity), smell, etc.

How did the Intern introduce the lesson, effectively manage time for students to progress through
the activities, and summarize the lesson with the students?
Opened class with a bell ringer asking students to match Latin names of known mammals with their
common names. Activates prior knowledge
Before releasing students to the lab area for the activity, explains the instructions to students and the
procedure for forming groups & getting started.
At the end of the lesson, gives a wrap up about where the lesson will be going next week.

How did the Intern assess individual accountability for the student work accomplished in the
lesson?
Circulates as students work to classify objects. (although the group at station 5 did not really do
anything to sort objects, and I did not see this addressed).
Students grouped by fours so there is an opportunity for one or more students to just sit there (no
roles or other accounting for individual accountability within groups).
Students expected to write notes during the lecture portion of the class.

How does the Intern demonstrate an awareness of student diversity in their teaching (gender,
ethnicity, students who are learning the content in a second language, accommodations for
students with special needs)?
Uses group work so students can support one another during the activity.
Visual aids to accompany the lesson (ppt for bell ringer, writes categories & characteristics on the
board, ppt to accompany lecture)
No students obviously needing accommodation.

COMMENTS FOR DEBRIEFING / CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT TIP (TRY THIS!):
Id recommend having student set up a chart (or use a handout) for them to keep track of their
classification procedure / justifications (list each category & the items within with the justification for
the choice)- this would help with accountability and enable you to see more quickly how much
progress each group has made.
You look so much more comfortable in your role as a teacher today than you have in past
observations! You look like you are really ready for your own classroom J
