Abstract

This is a continuation of a case study looking at a 12 year old boy in the 7th grade who is
experiencing difficulties in school. Ian Allen has been diagnosed with ADHD, and also has
Neutropenia which complicates his treatment. I review Ians personal, medical and academic
history. In response to academic concerns, Ian was assessed using the Woodcock Johnson III
Test of Achievement, a norm referenced test. Ian demonstrates a need for language arts
intervention in Broad Reading and Reading Fluency as demonstrated by the results of passage
fluency assessments.

1. Test Results
I administered several Passage Fluency assessments with Ian from
www.easyCBM.com. This was in response to Ians WJIIIs Broad Reading GE
score of 5.0 (Figure 1) and his Reading Fluency GE score of 4.5. Ians teacher
also presented to me a copy of his Accelerated Reading STAR Test (Figure 6) and
the record of tests that he had taken (Figure 7). Results on the STAR place his
IRL (Independent Reading Level) at 5.4 and a ZPD of 4.2 to 6.4. Success in
middle and high school is based on the ability to read fluently at grade level.
I assessed Ians reading fluency at the following levels: 7.3, 6.5, 5.5, and 4.5. The
assessments measure fluency by testing the rate or speed at which Ian reads. On
the passage corresponding to his grade level, Ian scored a 115 CWPM, which
places his ability in the 10th percentile. This indicates that 90 percent of students
his grade level can read at a higher rate. On the 6.5 level passage he scored 130
CWPM, placing him in the 20th percentile indicating that 80 percent of 6th graders
in their 5th month can read at a higher rate. On the 5.5 fluency passage he scored
142 CWPM, placing him in the 50th percentile, indicating that 50 percent of 5th
grade students in their 5th month can read at a higher rate. And, on the 4.5, Ian
scored 127 CWPM which places him in the 75th percentile, indicating that 25
percent of 4th grade students in their 5th month are able to read at a higher rate.
Because reading fluency can impact reading comprehension, I looked at his WJIII
Passage Comprehension score. It was GE 6.1. I gave Ian a CORE Reading Maze
Comprehension assessment, level 7-A. He scored a 100%.
2. Educational next steps for learning based upon test outcome(s)
We can determine that reading comprehension is not being adversely affected by
Ians reading fluency. However, in consideration of his easyCBM.com passage
fluency results, we can conclude that Ian would benefit from intervention in
reading fluency. He will have difficulty with some grade level texts and would
benefit from group readings and audio CDs of the texts in the areas of ELA,

Social Studies and Science. Within the 20 minute, three times a week, RTI block,
he would benefit from individual or small group reading and sight word activities.
Ian would benefit from reading out loud to a buddy or with an adult. An
emphasis on content area vocabulary with an opportunity to write will scaffold
learning and help him with the readings in those areas. At home, Ian would
benefit from working on sight words which are high frequency words in the texts,
literature, and tests such as the state assessments at each grade level. Ian should
also have a minimum of 20 minutes each night to read, and about 10 minutes to
write and reflect on it.
I have identified 3 Common Core Standards that will aid us work towards help us
build up Ians reading fluency.
3. California Content Standards Common Core
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.7.2 determine a theme or central idea of a text and
analyze its development over the course of the text; provide an objective summary
of the text.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.7.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they
are used in a text, including figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the
impact of rhymes and other repetitions of sounds (e.g., alliteration) on a specific
verse or stanza of a poem or section of a story or drama.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.7.10 By the end of the year, read and comprehend
literature, including stories, dramas, and poems, in the grades 68 text complexity
band proficiently, with scaffolding as needed at the high end of the range.
4. IEP Goals

Ian will increase his CWPM by 20 (to 135 CWPM) within 3 months as measured
on easyCBM.com.
Ian will accurately read aloud (80% to 100%) material from the grade level core
curriculum within 6 months.
Ian will decode words on the 6th and 7th grade word list using words he knows
with 90% accuracy within 6 months.
