As ESL teachers, we know the importance of telling and sharing stories in

various formats in order to cultivate qualifying digital citizens and facilitate deep
understanding of the concepts we teach. Furthermore, helping students produce
digital content directed to ESL while engaging them in creative and reflective tasks
provides an opportunity for students to not only read, but also practice composing
multimedia texts, and to efficiently share their stories with their peers. In other
words, incorporating multimodal texts into the classroom not only helps to expand
students understanding of visual and digital ESL content but also has the
pedagogical potential to transform them from content consumers to content
producers.
Goals and Objectives:
1. How to produce a self-narrative
-using the 5 senses model
-using an online animation software (PowToon)
-using past tenses
-using sensory adjectives
2. Students will create a project for the purpose of their future aspirations (portfolios, jobs,
school applications). The content is based on their personal stories and skills which they can
use after High School.
Unit Plan:
Day 1:
-Watch a YouTube video
-Analyze it for grammar, key sensory words, adjectives and the main life changing moment.
Students will have to recognize how the person was before and after his/her epiphany and how
the life changed.
-Students will summarize the videos in a sentence or 2 using past progressive (review form)
-Brainstorm life changing events they experienced
Day 2:
-Present the sensory model with an example
-Have them fill out a sheet for the 5 sense model using the simple and past progressive.
Day3:
-Using the sensory chart from day 2, students will produce a narrative in paragraph form.
-Students will peer review each others sentences
Day 4:
-Introduce PowToon and provide students with trial on how to use it
-Students will have the rest of the class to play with this technology

Competencies covered

Competency 1: Interacts orally in English

Students will discuss the process of the 5 senses model with a classmate and the class as a
whole and brainstorm stories.
Students will meet this criterion by doing a voice-over in their PowToon project.
Competency 2: Re-invests understanding of texts
Students will have to interpret the 5 senses model given to them in class and personalize it
to produce their final PowToon project.
MATERIALS AND AIDS: We will be using the online animation website POWTOON as an
instructional tool to help our students create narratives of their own lives.

CML insights:
Privacy rights, and who has access to the PowToon after its published on YouTube.
Who would you share this with and why? Who would you not want to have access to
it? Do you see yourself represented in this form of media?
How would very personal stories (e.g. rapped) be affected by this?

Pedagogical Goals of the Project
We hope to engage students in active and reflective learning that will give them tools to
understand themselves and their environments better. By following an inquiry based approach,
this hopefully will contribute to an overall sense of active citizenship by presenting their own
unique story while learning about their peers perspectives.
Self-Assessment:
How well did your story fit into PowToon?
Did you feel represented using this form of
technology? How would you rate your accessibility of
the tools?
How would you rate your ability to represent your story in
PowToon? How easy was it to use the grammar forms in this
project?
