1. History (on first glimpse):
neighborhoods, stores for shopping,

The houses in this community
seemed as if they were built
recently. They were large with
spacious lawns. However, the
neighborhoods in this community
seemed more segregated from each
other. There were plenty of nearby,
up scale stores at a nearby mall.
Recreation areas included front
lawns, low traffic streets and parks.

2. Demographics: Types of people,

age groups, families, alone,
homeless, race types,
homogeneous:
This community was largely made
up of white families. I am sure there
are other groups in this community,
but in the video, we saw likely
parents and their children. There
were no minorities present in the

COMMUNITY
A. Community Core
1. History (on first glimpse):
neighborhoods, stores for shopping,
building condition, recreation areas,
hygiene status:
This community had neighborhoods
right next to each other. There was
no physical separation from one
neighborhood to the next. The
houses looked older, but still well
maintained for the most part.
Stores were scattered throughout
this community, but none of the
fancy stores seen in the other
community were present. Buildings
seemed much older and more used,
but there were some beautiful old
buildings in this community that the
other community lacked. Recreation
areas included children dangerously
playing in the street and a number
of parks throughout the community.
2. Demographics: Types of people,
age groups, families, alone,
homeless, race types,
homogeneous:
This community provided an array
of people. Age wise, there were
only a couple of instances when we
saw what looked like a family.
Otherwise, it was college-age and
middle-age individuals. A variety of

video we watched. There were no
homeless people in the video. By a
quick glance, every person we saw
in this video seemed to be middle
class or above. A homogenous
community.
3. Ethnicity: Do you note different
ethnic groups (as depicted in
restaurants, festivals, signs of
different cultural groups:
I know they are present in this
community, but I did not note
different ethnic groups in the video.

4. Values and Beliefs: Do you note

religious icons eg. Temples,
churches, mosques, synagogues.
Landscape and lawns, presence of
flowers, gardens? Historical markers,
heritage, signs of art and culture:
I know there are a variety of
religious structures in this
community, but only noted a church
in the video. The lawns were well
tended and spacious with gardens
and flowers. There are few historical
markers or signs of culture in this
community.

B. Subsystems
1. Physical Environment: How does
the community look? Reflect on
flora, housing, zoning, space, green
areas, animals, people, man-made
structures, natural beauty, water,
climate:
There were nice lawns and a large

races were represented. There was

also greater socioeconomic variety.
There was a homeless man at one
point in the video when not much
earlier we had seen nice houses
and likely upper middle class
individuals. A heterogeneous
community.
3. Ethnicity: Do you note different
ethnic groups (as depicted in
restaurants, festivals, signs of
different cultural groups:
There are a variety of ethnic groups
in this community, seen in this
video in the variety of restaurants
available at a quick glance. I know
from firsthand experience that
there are cultural festivals and
signs of other cultural groups
throughout this community.
4. Values and Beliefs: Do you note
religious icons eg. Temples,
churches, mosques, synagogues.
Landscape and lawns, presence of
flowers, gardens? Historical
markers, heritage, signs of art and
culture:
I know there are a variety of
religious structures in this
community, but only saw a church
in the video. This church was older
and subjectively more beautiful
than the one seen in the other
video. Lawns were largely absent in
this video as were private flowers
and gardens. There are signs of art,
culture, museums and the like all
over this community.

Flora was largely confined to the

number of trees in this community.
Housing was large and safe, but
neighborhoods were isolated from
each other and from stores and
workplaces. There was little in the
way of animals or natural beauty in
this community. Man-made
structures included the houses and
stores seen in the video.
2. Health and Social Services:
Evidence of acute or chronic
conditions? Shelters? Traditional
Healers (herbalists), Note clinics,
hospitals, practitioners, public health
services, emergency centers,
nursing homes, social services,
home health agencies:
I did not note the presence of any
acute or chronic conditions in this
community. I know there are clinics,
hospitals and the like present, but
none were seen in this video.

3. Economy: Is this a thriving or

underserved community? Are there
signs of industries, stores or places
for employment? Signs of
underprivileged or unemployment:
Largely thriving. There are signs of
industry, nice stores and plentiful
employment. I did not notice any
signs of underprivileged individuals
or unemployment.

4. Transportation and Safety: What

type of private or public
transportation is available? Are

public parks, but the streets were

lined with trees. There were both
large and small parks present in
this video. Housing was smaller and
older than in the other community,
but it was also located in a way that
made biking or walking to stores
and jobs feasible. I did not see
many animals in this video either.
There was a large lake at one of the
parks.
2. Health and Social Services:
Evidence of acute or chronic
conditions? Shelters? Traditional
Healers (herbalists), Note clinics,
hospitals, practitioners, public
health services, emergency centers,
nursing homes, social services,
home health agencies:
The only acute or chronic conditions
I noticed were a seemingly
homeless man and a blind man on
the street. There are clinics and
resources available to these
individuals in the city, but they
were not seen in the video. The
same can be said for hospitals,
clinics and the like.
3. Economy: Is this a thriving or
underserved community? Are there
signs of industries, stores or places
for employment? Signs of
underprivileged or unemployment:
This community is also largely
thriving. There are signs of industry,
stores and places for employment
as well. There are, however, more
signs of unemployment and
underserved individuals in this
community. We did see a homeless
man in the video. Obviously, this
person is not thriving. However,
most folks in the video seemed to
be on their way to class or work.
4. Transportation and Safety: What
type of private or public
transportation is available? Are

buses, bicycles, taxis, sidewalks,
accommodations for disables
people? Are police and fire services
available?
There was no public transportation
seen in the video, but I know there
are some scattered bus routes.
Outside of that, public
transportation, walking and biking
are far less reasonable options in
this community. I know there are fire
and police services available, but not
seen in the video.
5. Politics and government: Note
signs of political activity (eg. Posters,
bill boards, signs):
They are common around campaign
season, but none seen in the video.
6. Communication: Do you note
common gathering areas? Signs of
newspaper stands, TVs, pay-phones,
radios, cell phones, internet access
(smart phones, computers, ipads)?
The library and Starbucks serve as
common gathering areas. I did not
see newspaper stands, pay phones,
public radios or public televisions. I
did see individuals on their cell
phones.

7. Education: Are there schools,

universities, colleges? Note the
condition. Do you believe that
standard of education is an issue?
Are there signs of libraries, book
stores, internet cafes?
Large, recently built public schools.
No colleges or universities seen in
the video, but I know they are
present. Standard of education is an
issue everywhere unfortunately, but
less here than in other communities.

buses, bicycles, taxis, sidewalks,

accommodations for disables
people? Are police and fire services
available?
Public transportation is much more
widely available in this community.
Between busses and taxis and the
walkable and bikable nature of the
neighborhoods, there is little need
to own a car in this community,
whereas it is almost a requirement
in the other. I know there are fire
and police services available, but
not seen in the video.
5. Politics and government: Note
signs of political activity (eg.

They are common around campaign
season, but none seen in the video.
6. Communication: Do you note
common gathering areas? Signs of
newspaper stands, TVs, payphones, radios, cell phones,
internet access (smart phones,
computers, ipads)?
The library, coffee shops and the
university serve as common
gathering points. There are more
available in the city than the
suburbs due to more public space.
However, I did not see newspaper
stands, pay phones, public radios or
public televisions. I did see
individuals on their cell phones.
7. Education: Are there schools,
universities, colleges? Note the
condition. Do you believe that
standard of education is an issue?
Are there signs of libraries, book
stores, internet cafes?
We did not see public schools in this
video, but I know the ones in the
city are older, in poorer condition
and less highly rated than the ones
in the surrounding counties. There
is a large university present, seen in

I saw libraries, bookstores and
Starbucks (which can serve as an
internet caf).

8. Recreation: Note major forms of

recreation. Where are the children
playing? Are there recreational
facilities (gymnasiums, indoor play
areas, play grounds)? Adult and
children day care?
There is a gym and indoor play areas
present for children to play at. I
know that that gym also provides
childcare. There are low traffic
streets and large private lawns for
the children to play in. There are
also parks present in this community.

C. Summarize your
Perceptions
1. Reflect on general appearance of
the communities.
This was a nice, clean, homogenized
community with a lot of resources
and a thriving economy.

2. What strengths or weaknesses do

you identify?
Newness, cleanliness and tidiness
are strengths. A lack of identity,
excitement and public transportation
are weaknesses.

the video. Standard of education is

likely not an issue for the college
students, but a huge problem for
the elementary, middle and high
school age kids in this community. I
did not see bookstores, but I did see
libraries and coffee shops.
8. Recreation: Note major forms of
recreation. Where are the children
playing? Are there recreational
facilities (gymnasiums, indoor play
areas, play grounds)? Adult and
children day care?
There are a number of nice public
parks available for children to play
in. There are gyms in the city, but
none seen in the video.
Unfortunately, when children want
to ride their bike, their options are
crowded sidewalks or crowded
streets. This presents a dangerous
problem. I did not see signs for
adult day care, but I know child day
care is available at the YWCA, seen
in the video.
C. Summarize your
Perceptions
1. Reflect on general appearance of
the communities.
This was a less clean, but much
more unique, community with
probably an equal amount of
resources (but an unequal amount
of need for assistance) and a lesser
economy overall than the other
community.
2. What strengths or weaknesses do
you identify?
An exciting, multicultural
environment without the need to
drive a car. Mixed use development
brings commercial, residential and
industrial development together
instead of being isolated as in the
previous community. Poverty, crime
and cleanliness are likely to be
larger problems in this community.

Largely healthy with plenty of
resources to intervene if this
changes.
4. What actual or potential problems
can you identify?
A possible danger caused by
sedentary lifestyle due to cars being
the primary mode of transportation.

5. What recommendations would you

make to improve or enhance healthy
living?
Ensure that adequate cardiovascular
activity is being performed.
Residents should be sure to run,
walk, bike or swim 30 minutes a day.

6. Would you be willing to work or

live in this community? Explain.
I would be more likely to live in this
community if I had school age
children. The schools are much
better, crime is much lower and it is
safer overall.

appearance of the community.
Largely healthy with plenty of
resources to intervene if this
changes.
4. What actual or potential
problems can you identify?
More likely to be a victim of violent
crime. Pollution encountered from
the streets and passing cars can
damage the body as well.
Homelessness. There was a blind
man crossing the street by himself.
5. What recommendations would
you make to improve or enhance
healthy living?
Try to avoid being near pollution
and traffic at peak times. Use
common sense to avoid potentially
violent situations. Make use of
resources for homeless individuals.
The blind person would be well
served by seeking out assistance as
well.
6. Would you be willing to work or
live in this community? Explain.
Until I have children to be
concerned about, this community is
much more attractive to me. It is
more exciting, has more venues for
cultural enrichment and is easier to
navigate and traverse without
needing a car. I enjoy riding my bike
and dislike driving, so this is
probably a bigger selling point for
me than others. These positives
outweigh the negatives of this
community for me.
