Siyam in Quran and Sunnah

Siyam has been mentioned in Quran along with
Salat 26 times.
Oh you who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was
prescribed to those before you, that you many learn piety and
righteousness" (Q 2:183
Fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those
before you, that you may attain Taqwaa." (Q2:183
The superstructure of) al-Islam is raised on five (pillars), i. e.
the oneness of Allah, the establishment of prayer, payment of
Zakat, the, fast of Ramadan, Pilgrimage

Task1:
What is Sawm/Siyam? When does it take place? Upon
whom it is a must? In what year was it put obligatory?
What might nullify or break Siyam/ Sawm? How many
times it has been mentioned in Quran?
Task2:
How many types of Siyam are there?
How was Siyam put obligatory upon Muslims?
Task3:
What are the benefits of Siyam ? Physical,
psychological, social, and mental benefits.

Task1:
Siyam / Sawm means fasting, it is to abstain from eating,
drinking, and having any kind of sensualities from before the
break of the dawn till sunset. Fasting will not be valid

without Niyyah.

Siyam takes place during Ramadan, the ninth month of the

Islamic calendar. During the 29/30 days of Ramadan
Siyam is obligatory upon the one who fulfils the five following
conditions:
1- Being a Muslim.
2- Being accountable. (Mukalaf).
3- Being physically fit. (Not sick).
4- Being settled. (Not travelling).
5- No impediments to fasting are there. (Obstacles).
Fasting the month of Ramadan was made obligatory (wajib)
during the month of Shaban, in the second year after the
Muslims migrated from Makkah to Madnah.

Task1:

Any of the following invalidates

the fast: eating or drinking,
sexual relationship, deliberate
inhalation of smoke, deliberate
vomiting.

Task 2:
Obligatory
This includes the whole ninth month of the lunar year i.e. Ramadan
from the break of the dawn till sunset.
Voluntary
1-Each Monday and Thursday of a week
2-The 13th, 14th, and 15th day of each lunar month
3-Six days in the month of Shawwal (the month following Ramadan)
4-The Day of Arafat (9th of Dhu al-Hijjah in the Islamic (Hijri) calendar)
5-The Day of Ashuraa (10th of Muharram in the Islamic (Hijri) calendar), with one
more day of fasting before or after it .
Penalty fasting
1.if an oath is given, and circumstances dictate that it be broken .
2.During the fasting period, if one deliberately breaks his or her fast, he/she
must free one slave, or fast for sixty continuous days, or feed sixty needy
persons, or spend in charity an amount equal to feeding sixty persons.
3- When we kill someone accidently

The ordainment for fasting was in three stages:

1- The Muslims were ordered to fast on the day of
Ashura (10th Muharram).
Narrated Aisha bint Abi Bakr :
Allahs Apostle ordered the Muslims to fast on the day of Ashura, and when
fasting in the month of Ramadan was prescribed, it became optional for one
to fast on that day (Ashura

2- The Muslims were given the option of either fasting

during the month of Ramadan or feeding a poor person
for each day they did not fast, with preference for
fasting over feeding.
Observe Saum (fasts) for a fixed number of days, but if any of you are ill or on
a journey, the same number (should be made up) from other days. And as for
those who can fast with difficulty, (e.g. an old man), they have (a choice either
to fast or) to feed a Miskin (poor person) (for every day). But whoever does
good of his own accord, it is better for him. And that you fast is better for you
if only you know. [Surah al-Baqarah 2:184]

3- Fasting the month of Ramaan became obligatory

without choice.
The month of Ramadan in which was revealed the Quran, a guidance for mankind
and clear proofs for the guidance and the criterion (between right and wrong). So
whoever of you sights (the crescent on the first night of) the month (of Ramadan
i.e. is present at his home), he must observe Saum (fasts) that month, and
whoever is ill or on a journey, the same number [of days which one did not observe
Saum (fasts) must be made up] from other days. Allah intends for you ease, and He
does not want to make things difficult for you. (He wants that you) must complete

Benefits of Siyam
1.It teaches man the principle of sincere Love: because when he observes Fasting
he does it out of deep love for God. And the man who loves God truly is a man who
really knows what love is.
2.It equips man with a creative sense of hope and an optimistic outlook on life;
because when he fasts he is hoping to please God and is seeking His Grace.
3.It imbues in man the genuine virtue of effective devotion, honest dedication and
closeness to God; because when he fasts he does so for God and for His sake
alone.
4.It cultivates in man a vigilant and sound conscience; because the fasting person
keeps his fast in secret as well as in public. In fasting, especially, there is no
mundane authority to check man's behaviour or compel him to observe fasting.
He keeps it to please God and satisfy his own conscience by being faithful in secret
and in public. There is no better way to cultivate a sound conscience in man.
5.It indoctrinates man in patience and selflessness, as through fasting, he feels the
pains of deprivation but he endures them patiently.
6.It is an effective lesson in applied moderation and willpower.
7.Fasting also provides man with a transparent soul, a clear mind and a light body.
8.It shows man a new way of wise savings and sound budgeting.
9.It enables man to master the art of Mature Adaptability. We can easily
understand the point once we realize that fasting makes man change the entire
course of his daily life.
10.It grounds man in discipline and healthy survival.
11.It originates in man the real spirit of social belonging, unity and brotherhood, of
equality before God as well as before the law.
12.It is a Godly prescription for self-reassurance and self-control.
