APEC Asian-Pacific Economic Cooperation
Provide a summary of President Obamas remarks by touching on the following:
1. Some of the factors he mentions that indicate the interconnectedness and
interdependencies.
It has helped the presidential administration of the U.S. with hi-tech
manufacturing, hiring more long term unemployed, and security and
prosperity intertwined with Asia.
2. What is distinctive about the Asia-pacific region and economic growth?
It is 40% of the world population and nearly 60% of the GDP. It has near three
fifths of the global economy with nearly 3 billion customers. It is estimated
that nearly half of the projected economic growth with come from the Asian
Pacific region and with that there will be incredible opportunity for economic
growth as well as creating jobs.
3. What is distinctive about the U.S. economy?
The U.S. economy is leading from a position of strength. American leadership
has been consistent and backed by the economy at home. There have been
over 10.6 million jobs created over the longest uninterrupted stretch of job
growth in American history. It has been on a pace for the best year of growth
since the 1990s. Since the start of creating jobs, the U.S. has put more people
to back to work than Europe, Japan, and every other advance economy
combined.
4. What are China and the U.S. working on together?
China and the U.S. are working on integrating China into the global economy.
They are also working on implementing new arrangements for visas
(student/exchange visas would be extended to 5 years; business/tourist visas
would be extended to 10 years). Additionally, they are trying to make
progress to work on a high bilateral investment treaty to open Chinas
economy to American investors and currently in the pursuit of an
International agreement on ITA.
5. His description of the trade picture as it relates to the Asian-Pacific countries
facts, numbers, percentages, etc.
Two of the largest economies in the world are China and America. The fastest
growing export market is China. There have been 1.8 million Chinese visitors
in the U.S. and of that they have contributed $21 billions into the economy
and 100,000 American jobs. Six of Americas top ten export markets are APEC

economies and more than 60% of Americas exports. There are more than $1
trillion worth of goods and services purchased by APEC economies and they
support millions of American jobs. Work done by APEC over the years have
lowered tariffs, cut shipping costs, made it faster, easier, and cheaper to do
business.
6. What is most striking to you about or in the presentation? Explain why.
The most striking thing that I found was when President Obama talked about
the employment rate and jobs that have been created. While watching the
politics on television would think that Americas economy is in the worst
shape than it has been in years and that the current presidential
administration has done nothing or very little to change that. However
according to information that the President provided there have been millions
of jobs created and it has been over the longest uninterrupted stretch of job
growth in American history. Additionally its on the pace for the best year of
job growth since the 1990s.
7. Develop two questions you think are significant and should be examined at
the next APEC summit.
What is the projection of job growth in the next five years based on exports
for China? Which country are they projecting to benefit most with APEC and
why?
