PhilosophicalModel

Enteringanewclassroomforstudentscanbeadauntingday.Theyaremeeting
theirnewteacherandlearningnewrulesandexpectationsthattheywillbeexpectedto
followthroughouttheschoolyear.Oneofmybiggestgoalsforthestudentsinmy
classroomistobuildacommunitywherethestudentscareaboutoneanotherandareable
toworkwellwitheachother.IwillmodelmyclassroombyusingSpencerKagans
philosophicalmodelbyhelpingstudentsmakeresponsiblechoices.Studentsinmy
classroomwillbeheldaccountablefortheiractionsandbyteachingthemtomake
responsiblechoicesIwillbeabletolessenthedisruptionsthatmighthappeninclass.It
hasbeenproventhatwhentheKagansstructureofclassroommanagementis
implementedearlyon,testingandgradesimprove(Winters,2013).AschoolinArizona
experiencedthisonaschoolwidelevelwhentheyimplementedtheKaganmodel,the
numberofnegativereferralsdecreasedwhilethenumberofpositivereferralsincreased.
Thisinturnhelpedtheschoolstestscoresincreaseaswell.
Studentswillhelpbuildtheclassroomcommunitybydisplayingartwork
thattheyhavecreated.
Iwillmodelforstudentstheexpectationsoftheclassroombydoing
whatitlookslikeandwhatitdoesntlooklikeexamples.These
exampleswillbepostedaroundtheclassroomforstudentstoreferbackto
whentheyhavequestionsabouttheexpectations.
Iwillalsoimplementclassroommeetingsatthebeginningofthedaytohelpthe
studentsknowwhatisgoingtohappeneachdayandsothattheycanknowwhatthe

routineforeachdayisgoingtobe.Thesewillalsobeheldperiodicallythroughoutthe
dayifneededtosolveproblemsorforteambuilding.Alargepartofgoingtoelementary
islearningsocialskills.ThisisalsoabigpartoftheKaganmodel,wewilllearnabout
socialskillseachweekandwritewhatitlookslikeandwhatsoundslike.Thisgoesalong
withlearninghowtohavecollaborativeconversationswiththeirpeers.
Therewillbelogicalconsequencesforactions.Unlikepunishments,
logicalconsequencesarerespectfulofchildren,realisticforthemtocarry
out,andrelevanttothebehavior.(Wilson,2013)Theconsequence
shouldmatchthebehaviorsothatthestudentsunderstandwhytheir
behavioriswrongandwhatwillhappeniftheycontinuethatbehavior.

ManageStudentBehaviorwithBig8
Thebig8willbeimplementedintheclassroomtomanagestudentbehavior.I
willbeusingverbalandnonverbalattentionpromptsthatareeasyforstudentstoquickly
respondto.OnenonverbalattentionpromptthatIwilluseintheclassroomisquiet
coyotesince,thisisahandgesturethatthestudentshavetocopyoncetheyseemyhand
goup.AnothernonverbalpromptthatIwilluseisslowlyraisingmyarmtobringthe
studentsbackuptothefront.AverbalresponsethatIwilluseisthatIwillsayhocus
pocusthestudentsthenrepeatletusfocus.
Signalsareimportantbecauseitgivesstudentstheexpectationofwhatyouneed
themtodotoshowyouthattheyarereadytolearn.OnesignalthatIwilluseistohave
thestudentsdodeerantlerswhentheirpaperisoutandtheirpencilisparkedonthedesk.
AnothersignalthatIwillhavestudentsdoisayogamountainpose.Thiswillgetthem
outoftheirseatsandgetsomeoftheirwigglesoutoftheirbody.WhenIamwriting
somethingontheboardthattheyneedtoeithersolveorreadIwillhavethempointtheir
fingertotheirheadtoshowmethattheyhaveitreadyintheirbrain.Doingthiswillkeep
themengagedwhileIamwritingsothattheyarenottalkingtotheirneighbor.
Timelimitsareimportantbecausethereisnotimetobewastedintheclassroom.
Studentsneedtolearnhowtomanagetheirtimebyprioritizingtheirwork.Iwillgive
studentstimelimitswhentheyaredoingtheirworksothattheyknowhowmuchtime
theyhavetoworkonanassignment.Iwilluseatimertohelpthemseehowmuchtime
theyhavetowork.

WalkingaroundtheclassroombeingvisiblethewholetimeishowIwilluse
proximity.Iwilldothistokeepstudentsfocusedonmeandengagedonthelesson.
Studentsthatareeasilydistractedandmostlikelytodisrupttheclasswillbeplacedatthe
frontoftheclassorontheouteredgeofthecirclesothatIcanredirectthemquickly.

RespectfulandSupportiveLearningEnvironment

TocreatearespectfulandsupportivelearningenvironmentIwillholdclassroom
meetingsatthebeginningofthedaytogoovertheschedule.Whilewearegoingover
thescheduleIwillhaveonestudenthelpmeeachdaywiththecalendarandonestudent
thatistheclasshelperthathelptheclassreviewsomeofthethingsthatwelearnedthe
daybefore.Classroommeetingswillalsobeheldtocreateaclassroomcommunity,if
thereisanyproblemthatarisesontheplaygroundorintheclasswewilldiscussitand
talkaboutwaysthatwecouldhavesolvedtheproblemandwhatwecandosothatthe
problemdoesnthappenagain.
Atthebeginningoftheyear,wewilldoalotofteambuildingandlearningabout
oneanother.Wewilldoteambuildingactivitieswherewecanlearnhowtoworkwith
eachothersinceduringtheschoolyearwewilldoplentyofgroupwork.Tolearnabout
oneanotherwewillhaveinterviewseverydaythatspotlightastudenttheotherstudents
willaskquestionsaboutthemandthenwriteasentenceaboutwhattheylearnedabout
thatperson.Thiswillnotonlyhelpwithstudentstolearnaboutoneanotherbut,itwill
alsohelpwiththeirwriting.
Wewilllearnhowtorespectfullytalktooneanotherandhowtohaveengaging
conversationswithourclassmates.Iwillteachthemhowtodiscussconceptswithone
anotherandalsoteachothersintheclassthatmightnotunderstandwhatisbeingtaught
byme.Studentswillalsolearnhowtorespectfullyagreeanddisagreewithoneanother
whentheyarehavingcollaborativeconversations.

Schoolsareverydiverseanditisimportantasateachertobesensitivetothose
studentsthatcomeintheclassroomfromdifferentcultures.Iplantohaveaculturally
responsiveclassroomwherestudentsarerespectfulofeachothersculture.Teachersin
culturallyresponsiveclassroomsstrivetocreateastrongsenseofcommunityinwhich
eachstudentunderstandsandacceptshisorhercontributiontothesuccessofthe
community.(Killion,2010)Studentswillbeabletolearnfromoneanotherandmay
eventakeuponeachothersvalues.Theywillcontributeaswebuildourownclassroom
communityandculture.

Big8
WhileteachingIwillusetheBig8sothatIcanmanagestudentbehavior
effectively.TheBig8isimportantineveryclassroombecauseithelpsininstructionby
givingtoolstograbtheattentionofthestudents.
Proximity:walkingaroundtheclassroomtokeepstudentsontask.IfIjuststand
atthefrontoftheroomthewholeday/wholelessonthestudentsinthebackwill
mostlikelytuneoutofthelessonandbegintothinkaboutsomethingelseandI
willhavetoreteachthelessonbecausetheytunedout.
Cueing:Iwillusethistogetstudentsontaskbysayingpositivesaboutthose
aroundthemtohelpthemmakeabetterdecisionthanwhattheyaredoing.
Expectations:Atthebeginningofeverydaywewilltalkabouttheexpectations
oftheclassroomsothattheyareremindedofwhatisexpectedoftheirbehavior.
Voice:Usingthiswillhelpkeepthestudentsinterestedinthelesson.A
monotonevoicewillendupinaboringlesson.

SafetyandWellness

Oneofmymaingoalseverydayintheclassroomistohelpeachstudenttofeel
safeintheclassroom.Iwilldothisbyhelpingthembuildaclassroomcommunitysothat
theyfeellikethattheybelongsomewhereandtosomething.Theclassroomshouldbea
placeoflearningandsafety,nostudentshouldfeelliketheyareleftout.Iwillteachthem
thateventhoughwemighthavedifferentopinionsandmightnotlikeeachother
everyday,westillneedtolookoutforeveryoneinourclassroomcommunity.
Topromotesafetyandwellnesswewillworkonprocedureswhenwehavefire
andearthquakedrills.Thisisimportantespeciallyforyoungergradesbecausetheyare
stilllearningwhattodo.Bypracticingjustasaclassitwilllessentheanxietythatsome
studentsmightfeelwhenwehaveafiredrillorevenarealdisaster.
Whenstudentsgotothebathroom,sothatIknowthattheyaregoneIwillplace
thehandsanitizerontheirdeskandbeforetheyreturntotheclasstheywillneedto
sanitize.Thiswillhelptoteachthemabouthygieneandtohelpkeepgermsaway.We
willalsohavearoutineofsanitizingbeforegoingtolunchsothattheirhandsareclean
beforeeating.

Wewilltalkaboutwhattodowhentheyseesomething
suspicious/somethingoutoftheordinaryontheschoolgrounds.

CommunicatingandInteractingwithCoWorkersandParents

TocommunicatewithparentsatthebeginningoftheyearIwillsendanotehome
introducingmyselfandintroducingsomeofthecurriculumthatwewillworkonduring
theyear.Theletterwillalsohavetheproceduresoftheclassroomaswellasbehavioral
procedures.Thiswillallowtheparentstoknowwhattheexpectationsareinthe
classroomsothatthereisnoconfusionwhentheirstudentgetsintrouble.Therewillalso
beaprivateclassroomwebsitethattheparentscanaccess.Iwillmakethisprivatesothat
wecanprotecttheprivacyofthestudentshelpingtheparentsfeelandknowthattheir
studentissafeinmyclassroom.
UsingSEPstocommunicatewithparentstheprogressoftheirstudents.When
thereareSEPsIwillmakealistofthestudentsandwriteafewpositivethingsaboutthe
studentandafewthingsthatthestudentcanworkon.DuringthemeetingIwillbeginon
apositivenoteandthenworkmywaytowardsthingsthattheycanworkonandendwith
somethingpositive.ThiswillhelptheparentandthestudentknowthatIcareaboutthem
andknowthatIreallyonlywantthebestfortheireducation.Iwillalsoexplainthedata
thatwehaverecordedinclasssothattheparentknowswheretheirstudentisandneeds
tobeintheirgradelevel.
UsingPLCtimetocommunicateeffectivelywithmygradelevelteam
andlearningfromthem.IplantobringnewideastomeetingsandIwill
beopentotheirideas.
