Indirect Lesson Plan: Learning Cycle
Health: Promotion of Healthy Eating
Students: 3rd grade
Time: 30 minutes
Materials: Journal, Pencil, MyPlate worksheet
Standard: HE.03.PH01.CC Identify the food groups and the current
USDA recommended guidelines
HE.03.PH01.GS Set a personal goal for healthy eating and track
progress
Objective: Students will be able to identify healthy food items from
the MyPlate chart and set personal goals in their journal.
Open: 5 min
1. Engage: The teacher will bring in some examples of the
healthy foods from the MyPlate chart as well as some junk
food options so they can recognize the difference between the
two.
-What are some differences between these two categories?
(Ones healthy, ones unhealthy)

-What are some of the benefits of the MyPlate foods? (Nutrition


facts)
-What is a reasonable goal for you personally? (Keep it within
reach)
To set the stage for learning, the teacher will show real world
examples of the effects of the different food categories.
Body: 20 min
2. Explore: The students will make a list of their favorite foods
from all food groups from the MyPlate chart and set a goal for
themselves about how to incorporate these items in their lives
everyday.
- Define the different food groups from MyPlate
- Go over nutrition facts of these foods
- Handout individual journals for each student and have

3. Develop: Have students keep track of their lunch eating habits
at school and record it in their journal. Ask, What do you
notice about your eating habits? How can you make positive
changes to your diet?
- Have students fill out a MyPlate worksheet with the
different food groups labeled and have them cut and paste

Observe their journals while they write to do a formative
assessment (check for understanding)

Get students in small groups to have discussions with their


peers about how their exploration is going and reflect with
each other

4. Apply: Discuss with students as a whole group about how
these decision affect our lives daily. Discuss the effects of
media and peers on these choices and how we can create
positive decisions in our lives.
-Go around the class and have students say what they have
learned from their journal and share with everyone their favorite
healthy food
-Make sure the students have a solid understanding of the
MyPlate foods and how to make healthy decisions, and create
positive influences in their lives.
Assessment: Have students turn in their journals and check for
understanding of the MyPlate foods and goal setting
