The Importance of Global Belonging

Last week I shared about the importance of each of our students experiencing a sense of belonging in our
school community and the benefits thereof. Research shows that developing a sense of belongingness is crucial
for our students future success. However, it is not enough for our students to feel valued, accepted, included
and encouraged by others in the classroom setting. We desire for our students to see themselves as an
important and active part of our community so that they will then take action beyond our school community.
We ultimately desire for our students to develop a sense of global belonging.
How does one belong to something that is global? Global often includes the concepts of international (between
and among nations, and even transcending national borders) and intercultural (referring often to cultural
differences at home and around the world). To belong to something signifies membership or citizenship.
Therefore, many see global belonging as being synonymous with global citizenship. Global citizenship is a
choice and a way of thinking. National citizenship is an accident of birth; global citizenship is different. It is a
voluntary association with a concept that signifies "ways of thinking and living within multiple cross-cutting
communities - cities, regions, states, nations, and international collectives. People come to consider themselves
as global citizens through different formative life experiences and have different interpretations of what it means
to them. The practice of global citizenship is, for some, exercised primarily at home, through engagement in
global issues or with different cultures in a local setting. For others, global citizenship means firsthand experience
with different countries, peoples, and cultures such as our students experiences at BIFS! For most, there exists
a connection between the global and the local. Whatever an individual's particular "take" on global citizenship
may be, that person makes a choice in whether or how to practice it. Fundamentally, global citizenship is about
self-awareness and awareness of others.
Global citizenship matters as it uses the vehicles of internationalization and international education as the tools
to encourage students to consider their responsibilities to their communities, institutions, and society. As
students become active and engaged in the world, their sense of belonging deepens and a virtuous cycle is
created. This is what our world needs, this is what we want from our BIFS students. This is part of the BIFS
mission. Wont you join us as we seek to strengthen our global citizenship? It all starts with a simple choice to
make a small difference today, and each day, in our world!

PTA News
Thank you to those that came to our PTA meeting on Wednesday. It was a great turnout given
the rainy weather and it being a public holiday for many parents. A big thank you to Kit Whitney
who led a discussion about Internet safety. We all got a taste of different topics to begin a
discussion with our children like How are you keeping yourself safe on the internet? or How do you keep
posts you see in perspective of real life?
Our next major event is International Day on Saturday, May 7, 10:00 am 2:00pm. We are ready for volunteers
to staff the ticketing booth, World Wheel of Fortune, drink booth and ELC Mini world booth. Follow the link to
sign up. http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c094aaaad2aa6ff2-international
Another main attraction at International Day is the World Wheel of Fortune. At
the wheel you can win a gift basket. We ask members of our school
community to donate gifts to include in these gift baskets with the theme of
their home country or an international theme. Think of what kind of goodies
you could donate. Here's an example from last year. Attach picture. You can
sign up here www.SignUpGenius.com/go/20F0945A8AC2BA5FE3-world

Track & Field Carnival April 28

On Thursday, April 28th, all students from grades 3-10 will be participating in our annual Track and Field
Carnival at Sajik Asiad Auxiliary Stadium. Electives will be cancelled so all participants will ride the late bus home
at 4:30pm. If your son or daughter cannot attend the event, students will be required to remain at home as
there will not be any classes on this day.
Parents are welcome to come cheer on the BIFS community. Students will be competing in at least 3 events by
grade level and house. The more fans the merrier!
Students are reminded to dress in their PE clothes and in their house colors. Please bring a refillable water
bottle, snacks and/or lunch (if you do not receive the school lunch), sunscreen, hat and lots of energy! Top
competitors will be invited to compete in the International Track and Field Meet with 5 other schools on
Tuesday, May 31st, 2016.
For any conflicts or questions, please contact Ms. Plicka at mplicka@bifskorea.org.

NWEA MAP Testing for Grades 2 - 9

During April and May, children in grades 2 - 9 will take tests called Measures of Academic Progress (MAP ).
We give MAP tests as a measure of individual student instructional levels, to measure individual academic
growth from year-to-year, and as a reflective tool on our programs in the areas of mathematics, reading, and
language usage.
MAP tests are unique in that they are computerized and adapt to be appropriate for each childs level of
learning. When taking a MAP test, the difficulty of each question is based on how well a student answers all of
the previous questions. As the student answers correctly, questions become more difficult. If the student answers
incorrectly, the questions become easier. In an optimal test, a student answers approximately half the items
correctly and half incorrectly. The final score is an estimate of the students achievement level. As a result, each
student has the same opportunity to succeed and maintain a positive attitude toward testing.
Over the next few days, your child will spend a total of about three hours completing these tests. Following the
testing period, you will receive a report showing your childs growth. For more information on resources for
parents, we encourage you to download the Parent Toolkit here. The toolkit includes information on how the
MAP is run and scored, as well as tips for parents to support their child at home.
MAP Schedule
Grade 2: Apr 26, 28, 29
Grade 3: May 2, 4, 6
Grade 4: Apr 25, 27, May 2
Grade 5: May 16, 18, 19
Grade 6-9: May 9, 10, 12

Assistance with a Research Targeted at Korean Parents

A Masters student in International Education at the University of Bath in the UK is currently conducting a smallscale research project with the aim of ascertaining why Korean families and/or international families comprising
one foreign and one South Korean parent might send their children to international schools within South Korea
as opposed to state institutions in the country or international schools abroad. Please rest assured that any
information disclosed in the survey will be used only for the purpose of the research, and the findings will be
available to BIFS.
If you would like to help with the research, please fill in the questionnaire:

The elementary will have photos taken on Monday, April 18, for inclusion in the yearbook. Each class from
Playgroup to Grade 5 will have a class photo taken. Additionally, any child who joined us since we had individual
photos taken last fall will have their individual photo taken (sorry, no re-dos are possible due to time constraints
with yearbook layout). Please send your child in clothing you would like commemorated in the yearbook. If your
child has PE on Mondays, they may come without the uniform as long as they are wearing athletic shoes (or
bring the shoes to change into for PE class).

Service Learning at BIFS

Creativity, Activity and Service in the DP

The CAS requirement is a fundamental part of the International Baccalaureate programme, and takes
seriously the importance of life outside the world of scholarship, providing a counterbalance to academic
studies. Students develop skills, attitudes and dispositions through a variety of individual and group experiences
that provide students with opportunities to explore their interests and express their passions, personalities and
perspectives.
The aim of the Service strand is for students to understand their capacity to make a meaningful contribution
to their community and society. Through service, students develop and apply personal and social skills in reallife situations involving decision-making, problem-solving, initiative, responsibility, and accountability for their
actions. Service is often seen as one of the most transforming elements of CAS by promoting students selfawareness, offering diverse occasions for interactions and experiences and opportunities for internationalmindedness.
Service within CAS benefits all involved: students learn as they identify and address authentic community
needs, and the community benefits through reciprocal collaboration. Service fosters development of abilities,
attitudes and values in accordance with the IB mission statement and the IB learner profile.
Service as Action in the MYP
The IB mission statement stresses that its concern extends beyond intellectual achievement, and that students
should develop a personal value system that guides their own lives as thoughtful and active members of local
and global communities (MYP: From principles into practice). Service as Action supports intercultural awareness
by providing students with the opportunity to develop empathy and respect for others. These experiences lead
to deeper understanding of themselves and the communities to which they belong. This reflects our own
Mission statement.
Service as Action activities have been broken into 3 levels. The first level reflection needs to be part of all
stages of the Service Learning Cycle. Reflection provides the proof that learning is happening before, during and
after the experience is completed.
The second level focusses on community. For students to choose actions at the community level they must
develop an understanding of what constitutes a community and which community they wish to engage their
action.
The third is the initiating and planning level. This level prepares students for the IB Diploma CAS program.
The goal of this level is to take greater ownership over the experiences they take part in.
The significance of service is will be recognized from June 4th to 8th during Action Week. All students from
grades 6 to 11 will have a wonderful opportunity to experience service at different levels during this time. Their
participation is an imperative part of their BIFS education.
